You certainly know Space Spirate Trainer, one of the first VR games to be released in 2016. If you don’t know it yet, it’s playable for free in start modeo. Chris Hanney, the Australian from the Belgian studio I-Illusion has just confirmed the release before the end of the year of the “Arena” version.

Excellent news, while Oculus V30 should allow the maximum Guardian area to be increased from 100 to 200 m2.

This is one of the most interesting projects to exploit the possibilities of the Oculus Quest. A life-size combat game in virtual reality. An experience for the Oculus Quest based on the Space Pirate Trainer universe, but with very different gameplay.

Instead of using teleportation or controller joysticks, Space Pirate Arena invites you to physically move around the 1: 1 scale map. You will therefore have an experience similar to that of an indoor laser game.

Each player takes on the role of a space pirate, equipped with a pistol that requires a quick charge before firing. Which means that you have to be a little more strategic during the fights.

It also appears that the shots can ricochet off walls as well as various objects. Which should make the angle of attack possibilities a lot of fun.

You will need a large space to play it, but believe me, it is worth finding a large meeting room, an indoor basketball court or an indoor tennis court or even a shed. Watch out for outdoor spaces, as the Quest doesn’t like sunlight at all.

Create your own arena

The second originality of Space Pirate Arena is to offer a level editor. Thus, you will be able to create your own 3D VR playground to compete with your friends. You can then push the experience by recreating the VR universe in real life by adding the obstacles of your creations.

First Review Space Pirate Arena

I have already had the opportunity to Review games at the scale of a large area in virtual reality, and it is an exceptional experience for me. The immersion is maximum and you really burn calories while having fun.

Now that requires finding the right space to play it, a community of gamers. And, I still have some questions about the possibility and the stability of playing from a distance or necessarily needing to be in the same real playing area. Or how and who hosts the geolocation data.
