Since you were a mother, you can’t help feeling guilty about many aspects of your life. However, guilt is useless. Therefore, we will tell you about how to act in these situations.
If one thing is clear, it’s that mothers feel guilty about similar issues every day. For this reason, it is essential that we are all aware that this guilt only blocks us emotionally and does not help us at all in our daily lives.
Some things that make you feel guilty
Guilt is a feeling that we view as negative because it makes us feel bad. It’s like a black monster who, with his fetid breath, whispers things in our ears and, the worst part of all this, is that we let him! But we shouldn’t allow it cause this monster is destroying our happiness and our emotional well-being. So don’t let that guilt trap you anymore!
Here are some times when you can feel guilty and some tips for getting that little inner voice that tries to make you feel bad all the time to shut up and leave you alone.
1. When you use the TV as a babysitter
You might not want to admit it in public, but it’s something a large percentage of moms have done. When we want to cook, clean, talk on the phone, exercise at home or read, among other activities, we usually resort to this resource.
One tip for not feeling guilty when letting your children watch TV is to choose the content and pay attention to what they are seeing and doing at the time. The key is in moderation: the smaller they are, the less time they have to spend in front of the screen. For example, if you have to cook and you have a 2-year-old child, you can space TV time by 15 minutes.
2. Not always cooking healthy
Everyone tells you that you need to feed your children healthy. Of course, you have to forget the carbohydrates and all the foods that the little ones love the most. Maybe that’s why, on the nights you make them nuggets with ketchup for dinner, you feel like you’re poisoning them.
However, you shouldn’t feel guilty about it. In fact, it is common that on the most stressful and chaotic days, we feel that we have not been able to do everything as planned and cook easy recipes. We know that the kids will love it and won’t complain. Of course, there are days when we don’t feel like debating food. The key is in moderation. For example, a good option is to make a meal schedule every weekend.
3. When you yell at your kids
As a mother, you may sometimes yell at your children during times of stress or emotional vulnerability and feel guilty. Don’t get obsessed with it because no one likes to raise their voice to their little ones. And of course, you’ll feel guilty every time you do. Thereby, when you feel like you are going to scream, it is best to leave the scene and take a deep breath before provoking a stressful situation.
Think of these times as learning opportunities. If you’ve ever yelled, apologize to your kids and tell them it’s okay so they won’t be scared. Explain to them what happened, tell them that sometimes people yell when they are angry and it can make others feel uncomfortable.
If you have noticed that you yell too much at home and it has become a habit, it is essential that you reduce your stress level. If necessary, you can seek help from a professional therapist to understand your underlying stress and act accordingly. To act on the things that make you feel guilty, you can work less, exercise more, and not worry so much about everything. If you can do it, it will be worth it.
See mistakes as learning
As a mother, you will always want the best for your children and nothing will seem like enough. However, you may not have all the answers: sometimes you will raise your voice and you will not always manage conflict situations as well as possible. But that’s not a problem, since you’ll find that THE errors will always be your best teachers.
Finally, try to control your impulses, seek to reduce your stress level and, if necessary, get professional help to avoid feeling so guilty as a mother and act in the best possible way.
