SAP and Microsoft had announced in October 2019 a "privileged" partnership around the Azure and S / 4HANA offers. This Wednesday, January 29, 2020, they reaffirm their commitment to offer a deep integration of the ERP solution from SAP, S / 4HANA, on the Microsoft cloud infrastructure.

Microsoft and SAP reiterate their "privileged" partnership

SAP and Microsoft "favor each other", sums up Carlo Purassanta, President of Microsoft France, at L'Usine Digitale. SAP customers will be offered the Azure platform as a priority and vice versa. These companies will benefit from the combination of the advantages of the S / 4HANA solution, the SAP Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure to accelerate their digital transformation.

"SAP and Microsoft are very complementary", adds Gérald Karsenti, CEO of SAP France. "Microsoft has a lot of customers in the public cloud domain and SAP offers proven technology". However, the two partners do not close any doors: SAP can offer its solutions on other cloud infrastructures (Amazon Web Services or Google Cloud Platform, also partners within the framework of the Embrace project) and Microsoft can propose other ERP solutions .

He also offers some himself through his Microsoft Dynamics offer, but Carlo Purassanta does not see any obstacle to their cooperation: "(Our) portfolios overlap on pieces of value but there is no claim from Microsoft to say that it is the competitor of SAP on the application side. A huge majority of customers, big and small, bet on SAP", he adds.

Strong cloud growth at the expense of on-premise ERP

Gérald Karsenti, who talks about "a strong craze" ensures that "customers are gradually migrating to the cloud environment". The main concern is not demand according to him, but the skills that would allow his customers to carry out this migration without incident.

France follows the world movement. Over the past three years, SAP has noticed a gradual acceleration of the migration to the S / 4HANA environment. A movement that is growing today, hence this partnership with Microsoft. "80% of our customers with their own data centers want to close them by 2025", reveals Gérald Karsenti. This allows them to reduce their costs, improve their profitability and reduce their environmental impact.

Geographic coverage, the key asset of Azure

One of the arguments that appealed to SAP was the presence of Azure data centers in many countries. "Today Microsoft Azure has 54 implementation zones containing between one and four data centers, a geographic footprint greater than the sum of our first two competitors", recalls Carlo Purassanta. This allows customers to choose the reference area in which their data is stored, as well as the backup solution.
