Slipping into the shoes of Iron Man for a game. All children dream of it, even the grown-ups, have always secretly wanted to put on Tony Stark's armor and fight evil with latest generation gadgets. Hasbro presents this augmented reality headset really presents itself as a game, it has no more pretension than that and fortunately. The Hero Vision Iron Man AR Experience is not full armor, you shouldn't dream too much either, it's just a fairly low-end headphones.
Just download an application, put on your red and gold helmet and go on an adventure … in your living room. Ready to take the place of Robert Downey Jr? Let's go.
Unboxing of the AR Iron Man helmet
The Hero Vision Iron Man Helmet comes in a square box, very colorful and illustrated. On the front, you can see the AR Iron Man helmet in large. We are shown what we will see when we put on the mask: action and combat against Thanos the sworn enemy of Iron Man. Then we are given some details about the application to download, the minimum age of 8 years old and some pictures of the helmet from the inside. Finally, we can clearly see the name of the latest film in the franchise Avengers: Infinity War. We are then invited to go to the sides of the box, we discover how this game works. Using explanatory photos. We are shown very briefly, but clearly how to use the helmet: download the application, place the markers, insert the phone…
Even below the box there is information. Here you can make sure your phone is compatible with your AR Iron Man helmet. Indeed, it is not possible to use the following phones: iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, iPad, iPad Mini, Samsung Galaxy Note and Samsung S6. So be careful, a red square is drawn, you can put your smartphone inside to check that the size matches.
On another side of the packaging box, we find the different components delivered with the glasses: 3 AR markers, an AR glove, and of course the Hero Vision AR helmet. We are also told that we can also buy separately the 5 infinity stones. Hasbro tells us that the mask is not not designed for your phone security, be careful.
Finally, on the last side, visuals show us what we see when we wear the glasses. We can therefore defend cities, explore 10 combat levels and of course fight the mighty Thanos. It was long, but you will understand that it is a game for children, the packaging is very illustrated. It also contains many warnings and instructions.
Now let's go to the opening of this famous box. We discover a AR Iron Man helmet in red and gold plastic pretty rude. When you lift it, you can see the hoop that will fix the mask on the head as well as the AR glasses. Still below, the famous "glove" which is nothing more than a piece of plastic attached by a large black elastic band.
There are also the famous markers that will allow players to define a playing area. Of course all these accessories are provided with a manual that explains how to install the application, as well as the phone on the glasses, how to adjust the size of the helmet. …
Design and ergonomics of the Hero Vision Iron Man helmet
We are not going to lie to each other, this is not the game of the century or of the year for that matter. Presented in a very basic and low-end plastic, a golden and red paint that will probably not last long. The design of the Hero Vision Iron Man helmet leaves something to be desired. We start pretty roughly, and it's not going to work out.
The mask
This AR Iron Man helmet is imposing and heavy, especially for a child from 8 to 10 years old. When we tested it, we even had to hold it to keep it straight. This kind of design is not suitable for a child's head or even that of the editorial staff. There is still a small wheel at the back of the hoop that holds the helmet. It still allows to tighten the mask and adapt it to our taste. However, it is not not very comfortable. Note however that the contours of the glasses adapt fairly well to the face and do not cause any discomfort.
The installation
Now let's come toinstallation of the Hero Vision Iron Man helmet. Well explained and simple, That's a good point. Once the different components have been removed from their plastic case, just insert the phone on the front of the glasses. Using a push button, you enlarge the opening, then once the smartphone is in place, you release the button and your cellphone is fixed.
Then, to position the augmented reality glasses on the helmet, just clip them on. It’s really not complicated. Same for the hoop, you have to put the four branches in the slots provided and voila. be careful though, because the hoop does not look very solid. The installation is therefore really easy and is done in a jiffy.
The glove "
Coming to the "glove", it’s not clear if this is a joke. They did well to clarify "Non-contractual images" on the packaging, because we were on the verge of making false hopes. It's a simple piece of red plastic that you attach to the palm of your hand. And the famous stones that Thanos sought to conquer the universe are also reduced to plastic. A stone is already given to you and is fixed on the glove. You can remove it and put it back at your convenience. Not very impressive design level, for the full side eyes, we will iron.
The phone
Let's go to the smartphone. At this price, we can imagine that the AR Iron Man helmet is not complete. You must therefore add your smartphone to be able to play. One more problem, if you have an iPhone Plus or a Smartphone like Samsung S6, you should forget this game. The headset is not large enough to accommodate a phone of this size. This is a real constraint when you think that everyone today has bigger and bigger phones.
Application
The Hero Vison app is compatible with Android and iOS. She is easy to use. There are three tabs at the bottom of the screen.
Laboratory
This is where you can repair your armor components, strengthen your weapons and skills.
Figurines
In this tab we present the different stones available : time, spirit, power, space or even soul. We give you a short description by specifying you their power and how to use them. They are all associated with a figurine, that is to say a character from the Marvel world that we find in the last Avenger: Infinity War. Example: Captain America, Black Widow, Thor, Rocket, Groot or the Hulk.
Accomplishment
Here you can admire your successes, your conquests. This list is not very clear. It presents 10 categories, including survivor, repairer and scanner. Each of these categories has its level: Normal, Super and Mega.
With each achievement you earn points. These categories are unlocked when passing certain levels. The little wheel at the top of the screen allows you to choose the hand you use for the glove, the language, as well as some methods of use.
You can delete a game, start over, or start a new one each time. The Hero Vision Iron Man helmet app also offers you the store experience, just scan the markers in the store to start a game.
To get started, nothing could be simpler, just click on play, then the instructions will be spoken, but will also be written. You will be asked to scan your "glove", you will be reminded again how to place your markers. Always a little reminder leave the sound on. Better play in a closed and spacious room to avoid disturbing everyone.
Installation is therefore done in 4 stages: Markers, bracelet, glasses and vision. The application gives some tips for fixing your phone to the glasses. And here we go, the game can start.
Getting started with the AR Iron Man helmet
In this game you will have to defend cities, fight bad guys and especially face Thanos. It’s on the packaging, in reality it’s a little less exciting.
The visual quality of the AR Iron Man helmet is really poor, a sort of city of the future appears and we have to defend it against enemies who approach you randomly. The glasses are quite comfortable despite the weight of the helmet so it makes the experience less unpleasant, but it is far from being transcendent.
Thanos is a pale copy of the charismatic villain from the movies. We see him appear from time to time to tell us that we fight admirably, sometimes he threatens us to take revenge or destroy us, great.
As we said above, this is a game for children, and the main goal is to have fun. Even at this level the game disappoints us since we don't really enjoy playing. The Hero Vision Iron Man helmet offers us very limited game modes. When you are injured too badly, if you want to improve your "armor", change your weapons or heal, you must remove the AR Iron Man helmet again and take your phone out of the AR glasses. So you can access the application, which is not very practical.
The Hero Vision Iron Man helmet against the competition
As said before, this is not a game that we will remember for a long time. There is many other products that offer AR, some are of excellent quality, others a little less. Here is two examples of what you can find in an augmented reality game.
Jedi Challenges
Jedi Challenges is akin to a training simulation with three difficulty levels which take place in different atmospheres. We face stormtrooper, droids of combat, Sith lords … We can also play holochess aboard the Millennium Falcon. In addition to the helmet, we play with a lightsaber. Of course, this game has shortcomings like the movement tracking which is not very effective, same for the visual which knows some bugs. Yet despite all this, Jedi Challenges remains far superior to the Hero Vision Iron Man helmet.
Magic Leap
In a completely different range, we find Magic Leap One. It's not the same price or the same quality. The colors are vivid and bright and the placement in solid 3D. The projected images are in high resolution. So certainly, their price of about € 2,200 will slow down the majority of us, but the quality is still there.
Conclusion
It was not not a good Review, it's the least we can say. The AR Iron Man helmet is of poor quality, with unreliable materials, very limited game features. For 50 € it makes a lot of faults. So yes, it’s a game for kids, but it’s no longer an excuse today. The game remains all the same very simple and easy to install. The application is pretty well done, at least it would be more prominent if the game followed. Fortunately, we still have the Avengers: Infinity War movie to console us.
