Californian Oakley has teamed up with Intel to offer smart health connected glasses dedicated to athletes. Radar Paces allow you to collect activity data and benefit from the advice and information of an intelligent voice coach.
Despite the efforts of the Mountain View company, Google Glass has failed to win over the public. The project demonstrated that consumers are currently not ready to wear permanently smart health connected glasses.
However, this one example alone cannot annihilate the concept of smart glasses, which has been fantasized for decades by science fiction and technophiles. So, manufacturers persist, trying to create a device disruptive enough to convince the masses.
Sports smart health connected glasses
This is particularly the case for Oakley, which teamed up with Intel to produce the Oakley Radar Pace glasses. This accessory incorporates many advanced technologies. However, unlike Google Glass, this frame looks at first glance like a pair of classic glasses.
Radar Pace also does not have the same aim as the Google device. Rather than providing general information, these glasses are dedicated to sport and offers real-time activity monitoring, feedback and a coaching system for training. This specific vocation could facilitate its democratization.
The Californian company is not at the forefront in the field of smart glasses. It is particularly known for its different models of smart health connected ski goggles. However, this new model represents a technological leap forward.
Intel Real Audio
Radar Pace embarks various sensors including an accelerometer, a gyroscope, a barometer, and humidity and proximity sensors. It also comes with a pair of removable headphones and three microphones ensuring responsive voice control in all circumstances.
These microphones in question come with Intel Real Audio technology. This natural language processing technology allows Radar Pace to respond to all commands and questions and adapt to context. For example, the user can ask their glasses to suggest a daily training program. During exercise, you can ask the device about its heart rate.
The answers are indicated directly in the wearer's earphones. When launched, the system will include English, Italian, German, Spanish and French. It is also able to communicate with other voice assistants like Apple Siri or Google Now.
Smartphone app
These glasses connect to a smartphone application gathering the various data collected by the sensors. The user must enter their gender, age, height, weight and define their fitness goals. As the training progresses, the application adapts, learns and adjusts the programs according to this diet.
The system works like a real-time coach. It answers questions about current performance, and encourages users to adjust their efforts to achieve their performance. The wearer can interact with his glasses without having to press a button. Everything is done by voice command. This format turns out more practical than a bracelet, requiring you to lower your head to consult your wrist during training.
Oakley Radar Pace specifications
The technical components that allow Intel Real Audio technology to work are unknown at this time. Intel does not wish to communicate on the chip used by this natural language processing system.
Like Oakley’s previous smart health connected glasses, the Radar Pace connects via Bluetooth and lets you listen to music. We also find, in addition to voice control, touch controls to manage music and access digital assistant tips.
These smart glasses unfortunately do not have a heart rate monitoring. To benefit from this essential data, it is necessary to connect a smart health connected bracelet. The Radar Pace is compatible with most Bluetooth heart monitors. The autonomy amounts to 4 hours with music, and 6 hours without.
Aesthetic, light, comfortable, the Radar Pace presents itself as an excellent pair of smart health connected glasses. The device will available from October 1, 2020 for a high price of $ 449.
