Activated charcoal: effective, cheap... and forgotten - Treatments
Today, in hospitals, operating rooms are sanitized by carbon filters to neutralize anesthetic gases – halothane (ether), cyclopropane, methoxyflurane, nitrous oxide, propanidide… – and almost everywhere we use charcoal in water sanitizing products. Vegetable charcoal is probably the simplest and cheapest decontamination agent we know of.
A poison pump
But, the public, the patients, and even many doctors do not know it. However, for a few euros, you can now get coal or rather "activated charcoal". What is it? This charcoal is obtained in two stages: carbonization where the wood is calcined in the absence of air. Then activation: the wood is recalcined at the same temperatures, but this time, in the presence of water vapor, air, or oxidizing gases. This allows the development of a network of micro-pores which will be real traps for undesirable molecules. The coal dust develops a phenomenal contact surface : 1 cm3 of pulverized coal has a total surface of 1 km2!This explains its performance: coal can absorb 97 times its volume of carbon dioxide, 165 times its volume of sulfur dioxide and 178 times its volume of ammonia… Coal is thus the most powerful poison pump. This concerns animal venoms but also narcotics, dangerous drugs, alkaloids, food additives, agricultural chemicals, heavy metals, toxic gases, detergents, organic solvents, chemotherapy...
It purifies the whole body
But the indications for carbotherapy go far beyond poisoning situations. It can be used to solve the problems of bad breath (halitosis), chronic hiccups, flatulence, turista, and more generally all intestinal disorders. It is also recommended in case of liver problem (cirrhosis) or alcoholism: it is interesting to know that one gram of charcoal (1/2 teaspoon) neutralizes 60 ml of whisky. Finally, it is very good for dental hygiene when used to wash your teeth.
How to use activated charcoal?
- In case of severe poisoningThe recommended dose is 50 g for an adult and 1 g per kilo for a child, in cold water. The mixture has no taste.Repeat intakes of 20 to 50 g of activated charcoal every 4 to 6 hours for 1 or 2 days depending on the severity of the poisoning. The theoretical quantity of activated charcoal must be at least equal to 8 times the weight of toxic ingested. The 10 times margin is desirable. However, in suicidal poisonings and in comatose subjects, the quantity of the poison is impossible to know. One then automatically administers between 100 and 120 g of charcoal. Namely that a tablespoon contains on average 5 g of coal.- As a drainage treatmentThe dosages are obviously adjustable according to each case. On average, one can opt for the protocol of 2 tablespoons with three meals for two weeks for an adult (i.e. 30 g per day) then continue at the rate of 3 tablespoons per day for the following month if one wants to achieve deep cellular drainage. For a child, replace the tablespoons with teaspoons, and limit the treatment to fifteen days for common cases.
Are there any downsides to prolonged use?
Multiple experiments have been carried out on animals to verify whether charcoal also absorbs nutrients, causing long-term deficiencies. Their blood always retains the adequate level of calcium, copper, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, vitamins… and the pH of the urine remains constant. On the other hand, coal can have a constipating effect on some people. You should also know that charcoal inhibits oral contraceptives and reduces the effect of drugs.
