AFFINITY PHOTO course N°1: The interface
Affinity Photo Course #1: The Interface
We are starting a new series of courses in parallel with the Gimp course and the Photoshop course dedicated to the Affinity Photo software. Affinity Photo is very economical since you can download it for just under 55 euros. We will see that it is also very powerful.
It has a fairly classic interface in which we will find ourselves quickly, especially for anyone who comes from Photoshop.
Please note: this article is a written transcript of the video course broadcast on the Photophiles YouTube channel. So if you prefer the video format, don’t hesitate it’s here (about ten episodes are already online):
You have a classic menu bar at the top of the window (File, Edit, Text…etc.). Below is an additional toolbar that goes all the way. The main toolbar is located on the left of the interface, we will find classic tools: the magic wand (here called Selection tool by dispersion), the pen, the stamp (Clone tool). If a tool has a small triangular arrow associated with it, it indicates that other tools are “hidden” under the tool. Just hold down the click on the tool to make them appear.
In the right part, the palettes are displayed: for example settings, layers… etc. To add additional palettes, use the View/Studio menu. You then obtain the list of all available palettes. Just click on a palette for example Character to display it.
Very comfortable thing; navigation is done like in Photoshop. I can move an image with the Hand tool. If I’m with another tool, I can temporarily activate the hand by holding the spacebar. I can zoom in on the image by holding the CTRL key and rotating the mouse wheel, but also by using the shortcuts CTRL+ to zoom in and CTRL– to zoom out. To display the image at 100%, I can use the CTRL 1 shortcut. The CTRL 0 combination allows me to return to the initial size.
Another comfortable element: when you select a tool, you have information at the bottom of the status bar. The software thus suggests the different possibilities for using each tool by associating it with keyboard keys or manipulations such as click and drag. Each tool is thus documented in English in this status bar.
Significant specificity of the Affinity Photo interface; it offers 5 modes at the top left of your screen:– Photo persona, this is the one we will work on for the most part– Liquify persona will allow me to apply deformations on an image– Developp persona will allow, among other things, to manage RAW files– Tone mapping persona is devoted to color management– Export persona will essentially allow you to manage everything related to exports and in particular the management of slices when you want to make a website.
We are therefore on very classic things in terms of interface and for those who know Photoshop the transition to Affinity Photo can be done relatively quickly.
See you soon for the rest of this course, remember to subscribe to the Photophiles newsletter to be informed of the publication of new courses:http://www.forum-photophiles.com/index.php/register-for-participation
