A South Korean company will soon launch Ahead on Kickstarter, a device for connecting any bicycle helmet. The promising concept, however, may be impossible to use in France where legislation prohibits the use of a communication device while driving.

Turn any helmet into a smart health smart health connected object

Already seen at CES 2020 or at the MWC in Barcelona, the “Ahead” communication device, created by the South Korean company Analogue Plus, is being talked about again. It should indeed soon be launched on Kickstarter to obtain funding. Its concept is simple. Ahead can be attached to any helmet and, thanks to Bluetooth technology, allows multiple actions. Among these, there are of course telephoning but also listening to music or using a GPS service.

Easy to install, it includes microphone and headphones. So no need to provide additional equipment. The technology is based on vibrations. Thanks to an oscillator, the sounds are transformed into vibrations. They then become sounds again after the helmet is worn. The company even imagines a concept of audio conferences allowing for example a group of cyclists to communicate with each other. Integrated noise reduction technology allows you to listen comfortably without being disturbed by outside noise. But, since it does not cover the ears, it would be possible to remain attentive to the external environment.

Ahead, an uncertain use in France

Note that for the moment in France, Analogue Plus may well be banned. Until 2020, holding your phone in your hand was the only offense punishable by a fine of € 135 (without losing points on your driving license) for cyclists. But the passage of a new measure since July 1, 2020 prohibits the use of a headset or a device capable of emitting sound to the ear whether one is on a bicycle or in a car. The device is therefore at the limit of the legislation The change in regulations was also accompanied by a loss of points. 3 can now be removed. It only remains to wait to see how the device will be considered by the authorities. In all cases, caution should be exercised. For example, the use of mobile phones triples the risk of an accident. While Ahead is slated to launch on Kickstarter in two weeks, it is still unknown what its price and availability date will be. According to initial reports, production should start in July.
