AMICA Smart Toy – A link between autistic children and their parents

Jugjeevan Brar, a final year product design student at NTU, chose to focus on autism and invented AMICA Smart Toy.

By creating AMICA Smart Toy, Jugjeevan Brar wanted to radically improve the lifestyle of autistic children and their families.

The research conducted by the designer has highlighted that there is often a barrier of communication between an autistic child and his parents. This is the case when the child is unable to express what he feels because of a lack of emotional understanding. AMICA offers a platform where this communication barrier can be filled. She becomes a companion for the child and a support system for parents.

Marketed for children 4 years and older AMICA offers an emotional recognition game where various facial expressions will be displayed on its digital screen. The game has a 3-part structure where the child learns emotions, creates stories around emotions, and develops an understanding of emotions. The different lights offer a whole range of individual visual stimulation. Whether it's helping the child after a stressful day at school or after a nighttime sleep disturbance, AMICA's lighting schedules are 15, 30 or 45 minutes.

Through the application's community functionality, parents are able to develop a support network with therapists and education professionals. Inspired by the principles of ABA and TEACHH, analysis tools are provided to identify trends in behavior that the child shows, providing parents with a solution dedicated to their situation.

This device also provides support for the child's daily and weekly routines through the recording function that reduces the risk of anxiety or panic attacks. In short, a tool in the form of a game that seems very complete!
