an efficient but non-marking printer smart health innovation

After the launch of its first smartphone printer in 2015, Prynt returns with a “pocket” version of its product. The principle is the same as that of its predecessor: print photos directly from your smartphone. A new version which gives hope for many improvements, but which does not completely manage to convince.

Unboxing of Prynt Pocket

The Prynt Pocket is placed in a box classic design, but very pleasing to the eye. Its sober side is very reminiscent of Apple products, with an orange touch that makes it even more attractive.

Inside, we keep the same feeling of simplicity with the printer placed in the center of the box. Under the latter, we find everything you need to install the device and print your first photos. Note the presence of a bag of 10 sheets straight into the box. Otherwise, we are staying in the classic: a cable to charge the Prynt Pocket and a manual. The whole is very tidy and you don't waste time looking for one thing or another.

Prynt Pocket design and ergonomics

Design of the Prynt Pocket without iPhone

The first important feature of the Prynt Pocket is specified in its name: her size. This is particularly the case when compared to the first version, significantly larger. While the latter covered the surface of the smartphone, it is half as wide. She remains however quite bulky, but it would have been difficult to do better to print your photos.

On the look side, the Prynt Pocket is available in several different colors : Graphite, gray, lavender and mint. he holds well in hand and has a non-slip texture which prevents the device from slipping between your fingers. There is also a button to take photos and a wheel to manage the zoom. Two elements that compensate for the size of the device on an iPhone. If you have to go through a light installation in order to be able to use the Prynt Pocket, it is very simple. Each part is clearly explained, both in the user manual and in the dedicated application. It is not necessary no more than five minutes before you can start printing your photos (if you have thought about recharging your device).

Regarding the photos themselves, this is where we can be disappointed. Yes the idea of not having to use ink is good and allows an economy of means, she is not flawless. By heating the particular composition of the paper, the colors stand out, but not without take a hit at quality. If some offer a good rendering, especially of the skin, as soon as a too many colors are present, the observation is less positive. We meet with photo drooling slightly by place or blurring some areas. A design problem difficult to forgive. That being said, the images come out of the device in about twenty secondswhich is pretty fast.

Application and handling of the Prynt Pocket

Regarding its handling and application, the Prynt Pocket don't revolutionize anything. It keeps the same ideas as the first version, with the button to take photos and the wheel to take care of the zoom. Imitating the polaroids, it is easy to use and very instinctive.

From an application point of view, we are once again in known ground since it is exactly the same as the original Prynt. Here we find all the features to which it had accustomed us, but beginners will again have trouble understanding everything at the start. We have indeed struggling to find your way between menus, a problem that it would have been fashionable to resolve with the arrival of the Pocket.

Application of Prynt Pocket

Aside from the classic storage and sharing functions of our creations, there are of course the use of augmented reality. Just take a ehealth (only with the app) and then print the image. It will then start to move once passed in front of the camera. A gadget aspect just like for the first, but which remains sympathetic. Note that the room must be well lit, otherwise the ehealth will not work.

The Prynt Pocket facing the competition

first version of the Prynt printer

If there isn't a legion of printers clinging directly to a smartphone, there are a lot of them connecting to them. First of all, you can totally see the first Prynt as a competitor to his own estate. Indeed, the major difference with the Pocket comes from its size, clearly more cumbersome. However, it has the same photo quality and the same positive and negative points in terms of its application and handling. However, it benefits from a lower price than that of its little brother, since it is available around 150 euros.

kodak smartphone printer

When we talk about photos, how can we forget Kodak ? The company has now entered the smartphone printer market. If we deplore a application to perfectible ergonomics, she offers a excellent image quality. There is also a much lower price of the device (99 euros), but slightly bigger for each impression (about 60 cents per photo against 50 for the Prynt Pocket).

printer for smartphone fujifilm

When it comes to photographic quality, the smartphone printer that stands out the most is undoubtedly the Fujifilm Instax Share SP-3. Third product in its range, it keeps the best characteristics of its elders all in further improving image quality already great. Its application allows in particular to manage an impressive number of settings to personalize your photos. If there is only one defect, it is the price: around 190 euros. Unlike its other competitors, it also uses silver films, much more expensive (around 1 euro per photo).

Conclusion of the Prynt Pocket

The Prynt Pocket comes as a follow-up to a quality iPhone printer. If the goal of making a “mini” version of it is clearly a success, hard to say the same for the rest of the subject. We can certainly regret the lack of improvements and changes with the first version. If his installation and use are rather simple, despite a perfectible application, the quality of his photos does not live up to expectations. In itself, the Prynt Pocket is not a bad product, but the lack of novelty and corrections of certain problems play against it.

Good points

  • Much less bulky than the first version

  • A good grip

  • Reasonable photo price

Negative points

  • Photos of questionable quality in some cases

  • Always a little instinctive application

  • No improvement compared to the previous version except the size

  • Only available on iPhone

Design and Ergonomics : If the Prynt Pocket passes its “Mini” version bet of the original printer, the quality does not follow. We end up with photos drooling in case of a large number of colors or offering a blur anything but artistic. Too bad, because the rest of the design of the device is well thought out.

Getting started : A simple and effective handling. Difficult to miss this part however, given that it boils down to the use of a button to take a photo and a wheel to zoom.

Application : If the application loses the novices, it wants to be relatively easy to use once you take it in hand for a little while. It is particularly unfortunate that it has not been reviewed for the release of the Prynt Pocket.

Features : We always find the same functionality since the first version. It's a bit of a shame, but they have the merit of working well and of offering nice content, such as augmented reality.

Quality / Price ratio : If the price of the device is a little too high considering what it offers, that of the sheets has the merit of being honest. At around 50 cents a photo, there is a better quality / price ratio than the competition.
