An ultrasonic bracelet blurs the microphones around you
And if an ultrasonic bracelet allowed you to jam the microphones of smart speakers and other devices equipped with microphones are not supposed to listen to you all the time.
This ultrasonic bracelet was designed by researchers at the University of Chicago. It uses ultrasonic emissions from 24 speakers to scramble most microphones. Whatever direction they are in. Oriented towards you or simply present in a room.
The gadget takes advantage of the non-linearities of its built-in amplifier to "drive away" the ultrasonic noise in the audible range and make recordings useless.
Not only does this ultrasonic bracelet provide omnidirectional scrambling, it also eliminates blind spots (where the transducers cancel each other out) by the movement of the wrist. It is therefore more efficient than specialized stationary jammers and can even jam hidden microphones. A great technological performance!
As you can see in the photo, the prototype is a bit bulky. The internal components consist of a handful of cards and a battery. Scientists told the New York Times that investors have asked to have the technology commercialized. It is estimated that you could make this anti-microphone bracelet for around 20 dollars. This could be viable for anyone who fears being listened to by voice assistants or spies; especially for people who tend to move from room to room.
The question of whether you will make it widely available or not is another question. There are a number of ethical concerns. If you wear this device in public, you could wreak havoc with phone calls and other microphone dependent devices.
As useful as the bracelet is, it could cause legal problems if not used responsibly. Case to follow!
