“Eat five fruits and vegetables a day”, “play sports”… but also “go to the museum”. Indeed, it is proven, art is beneficial for our health! Focus on this fact recognized by the WHO yet relatively unknown to the general public.

Visiting museums and theatres: essential for your health!

A century ago, people were not convinced that sport was good for health. We find ourselves in the same situation today with the works of art “says Nathalie BONDIL, Museologist and former director of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (MMFA).

Cognitive stimulation and socialization are two direct consequences of a cultural practice, whatever it may be. Integrating a regular cultural practice into our lives has great benefits for our well-being and therefore our health. Moreover, culture and art are necessary vectors of social cohesion for everyone.

 Culture and social bond

Culture cannot be reduced to what constitutes a work of the mind. According to sociologists, culture is linked to all social practices (sport, cooking, DIY, etiquette, etc.). TOLSTOÏ said that “Art is fundamentally linked to religion”. Did you know that religion means “to connect”! This is proof that art brings us closer to each other and allows us to become full members of society! It is a real vector of social cohesion.

Towards new orders?

In Canada, museum outings are prescribed by doctors to treat certain patients! This country is at the top of the list in its research on the relationship between art and health. The goal of Canadian scientists is to intersect science and health with the arts and foster interdisciplinary dialogue.

With this in mind, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts stands out and specializes through co-creative partnerships to imagine new healing or well-being practices. According to its director and chief curator, Nathalie Bondil, “Art is good. The impact of aesthetic emotion on the physical state is obvious. The effects are significant in patients with eating disorders, geriatrics, mental illness, Alzheimer’s, autism or convalescence.

Don’t wait for the symptoms to go to the museum!

However, do not think that you have to be sick to go to the museum! According to a University College London study, cultural visits reduce the lifetime risk of depression by 32%. The study carried out on visitors contemplating works by great masters demonstrates how much art stimulates our intimate and deep emotions.

Art, stimulator of dopamine!

Dopamine is essential to our well-being! Commonly called the pleasure hormone, it is involved in our emotions, our feelings, our desires. It is the source of our curiosity, our motivation!

The ball is in your camp !

Henry MATISSE said that a painting is like ” a good armchair that relaxes from its fatigues !
