The multiplayer RPG A Township Tale, developed in early access since 2018 for PC VR, arrives on Oculus Quest on July 13. Developer Alta has improved the gameplay and possibilities for this great MMO.

Storyline and gameplay

Like any good RPG, the game begins with the creation and customization of your character. For this, you can use or not Talems which constitute the currency of the game (gold coins). You choose your outfit and can customize the colors of each item (with two shades per item from the proposed palette). Each item can be colored and combined with other pieces to give you your own unique style.

You also have the choice among 8 body shapes, including some stockier types.

Once your character is ready, you start the game in an abandoned village located in a mystical valley. Your first mission is to develop your village. For that, you can play it solo, but the most effective is of player in team to divide the roles. Thus, each player has the opportunity to choose from one of the 5 roles :

Black-smith,
Minor,
Lumberjack,
Warrior
Archer.

Then you travel through a vast medieval world filled with ancient mysteries and secrets. Explore the dark caves, where terrible monsters and great treasures await you. The deeper you go, the meaner the monsters are. But where other even greater riches could be found. All the elements are interconnected. Through the sprawling city, the many suburbs, forests and the deep dark cave below.

Pick up, throw or give items to your friends.
Attack your enemies with your personalized weapons.
Build your equipment ultimate. Forge hundreds of weapons and equipment in different professions! Melt ores, forge weapons, chisel wood, and assemble equipment using physical tools!
Improve your level. Earn unique skills to define your profession. Specialize in different areas with your friends to create a unique group dynamic. This unlocks special abilities, like the ability to heat blades with a wave of your hand, charge arrows in rapid beams of light, or project shockwaves with the power of your weapon.

A cooperative MMO

A Township Tale is a cooperative VR RPG. The Quest version allows eight players to explore a persistent world together designed for adventure, discovery, craftsmanship and a sense of community involvement.

Australian studio Alta clarified that crossplay between Quest and PC is unfortunately not yet supported, but plans to support one-way crossplay in the future by allowing PC gamers to connect to Quest servers.

Additionally, the Quest version of A Township Tale will include most, but not all, of the features of the PC version at launch. But with a development schedule to achieve feature parity in the future.

Develop your skills

The item creation system is particularly advanced and reminds me of the best survival games. A Township Tale relies heavily on the development of this craft. It allows you to naturally take on the different roles to improve your city and especially your equipment.

In my first part, I remember making a weapon, then a sort of backpack. To achieve it, you collect raw materials to use them in another device by following the assembly instructions (we are almost on an Ikea piece of furniture).

Another example, blacksmiths have to heat cast metal before they can hammer it into a sharp blade that can be attached to a hilt to make a sword or ax.

The Alta studio

Alta was founded in 2016 by Tima, Joel and Boramy. The studio is currently developing its flagship VR title, A Township Tale. The team is made up of experience from studios such as, Rockstar Games (LA Noire), Activision Blizzard, WB Games, and Nintendo.

Notice A Township Tale

I had the pleasure of testing the beta versions. It’s beautiful, fluid and many players were already present. I love this kind of game in which you make your character evolve (you really make machines to improve others). All in an already large enough universe and especially multiplayer.

I think we’re having a real hit on Quest with its early release just before National Day. To meet francophones, the dedicated France Facebook group. However, it won’t be cross-play at launch, so Quest players won’t benefit from the thousands of current PCVR players.

Be careful, this game is going to take a lot of your time and it is addicting, because we always want to go further, to have better skills, better weapons, better clothes.
