Augmented reality for dentists

What if augmented reality included all dental offices? The company, Kapanu, wants to help patients realize and visualize the smile they will have after their reconstructive surgery.

Kapanu is a spin-off company of the Swiss Technical University ETH Zurich. Its CEO Roland Mörzinger collaborated with Disney Research to create an augmented reality engine for medical purposes. Dentistry was chosen as the first target market.

There are options that the user can then modify: the approximation of the teeth, the different shapes, etc. All of these changes are visible live. Once the patient has personalized their teeth and seen a preview of the result in an AR virtual mirror, the final model is sent for fabrication.

The system was presented at the Cologne International Dental Exhibition last winter. He clearly impressed all the participants. Moreover, the company was even bought by a big name in the sector: Ivoclar Vivadent.

This invention by Kapanu proves to us once again that augmented reality, which is often relegated to gaming applications, can prove to be very practical and very relevant in the medical sector. Personally, I find the idea absolutely brilliant and quite amazing. Besides, the dentistry market is only the first sector to benefit from this technology. I can't wait to see the next one!

Little idea: why wouldn't hairdressers also use this type of technology in their salons?
