Beats EP: review, price and specification – Headphones

[ad_1]

The design of the Beats EP is in line with the other models of the brand. Whether we like it or not, we have to recognize that the manufacturing and the finishes are, to say the least, neat. Part of the helmet arch rests on a sturdy metal base. The hulls of the ear cups as well as the central part of the hoop are protected by plastic hulls whose robustness seems at least correct. The helmet has beautiful finishes, no unsightly manufacturing marks or defects are visible. It can also withstand a few twists. We did not notice any design flaws during our Review.

For a headset on-ear (the headphones of the headphones rest on the pavilion of the ear), the EP offers a satisfactory comfort. The helmet is relatively light (202 g), the imitation leather ear cups are soft to the touch and there is no accent clamp effect. The deployment of the hoop is relatively generous, although one would have liked a small centimeter or two extra for larger heads. The helmet easily fits on the head and marries the flag of the ear.

As with the vast majority of helmets supra, comfort is less good for wearers of glasses (the area of the helix is caught between the helmet and the branch of the glasses) and pierced. It will then take breaks a little more regularly, but nothing that prevents the normal use of the helmet.

Apart from this, the only real weakness of the helmet when it comes to comfort is at the hoop. The rubbery material used has an unfortunate tendency to pull on the hair and one quickly feels the point of contact at the top of the skull because of the absence of real pad.

The EP connects via a non-detachable wired cable ending with a 3.5mm mini-jack connector. The connector is not bent and the cable is flat. Fortunately, it is not too sensitive to contact noises. This cable is a three-button remote that is fully compatible with iOS devices. You will not be able to adjust the listening volume on another device. Outside this point, it gives access to all essential controls: management of playback, calls, navigation between tracks and triggering the voice assistant of the smartphone.

The microphone built into this remote control does a very good job of capturing the voice … in a quiet environment. Indeed, the microphone is not at all directive and no noise reduction algorithm is present to support it. Result, the surrounding noises pollute the capture of the voice and it is quickly found drowned and very difficult to understand. Better to go directly by phone outside to be sure to be understood by his interlocutor.

Not surprisingly, the EP shows a strong preference for extreme low and low. Expect a particularly warm and boring sound.

After all, dogs do not make cats. The EP is a Beats "old-fashioned" headset and puts the package on the extreme low and low. Here we have a very warm and round sound that is clearly not likely to attack our eardrums. The impact and depth of the bass are propelled forward, which also tends to cause mask effects on the higher frequency bands (on demanding content with bass drum attacks very close or with many sources officiating especially in the grave register). The behavior of the membranes fortunately remains very correct and one keeps all the same a correct precision, that it is at the level of the basses or on the rest of the audible spectrum besides.

The very soft, even blunt aspect of the sound reproduction offered by this helmet is also due to the decline of high mediums. There is a fairly large hollow and marked between 2 and 6 kHz. The sensation of presence and clarity is withdrawn, as if a veil stood in front of the stage. This makes it difficult to distinguish between the elements placed in the foreground and those in more distant planes. Fortunately, the very slight increase between 1 and 2 kHz makes it possible to preserve the intelligibility of the voices. If not perfectly clear, they are never veiled under the wave of bass. The stamps remain identifiable, even if the EP is far from being the most faithful helmet. He does the job right on the treble side. We are clearly not overwhelmed by their airy appearance and their definition, but they are a minimum present. It is possible to perceive certain effects of parts and other subtle effects depending on the songs listened to, but do not ask too much. The restitution of the stereophonic space is correct in width. The stereo scene lacks depth, however.

Nothing to report on the side of the distortion, which remains extremely low over the entire audible spectrum.
