Bitkom survey reveals: Patients want access to their health data (findings, X-rays, etc.)

87 percent of Germans want to access their health data such as findings, X-rays, etc. This is the result of a survey commissioned by the Bitkom digital association.
Patients have a right to access their treatment files. Nine out of ten German citizens would like direct access to their personal health data, such as diagnoses, laboratory results, surgical reports or X-rays, which occur in medical practices, clinics or other health facilities. This is the result of the representative survey of 1,236 people aged 14 and over, which Bitkom Research commissioned by Bitkom performed. The question was: "Would you like direct access to your personal health data, which is generated in doctor's offices, clinics or other health facilities, e.g. Diagnoses of the doctor, laboratory results etc.? "
Why access to health data is so important for patients
For example, the patient needs health data when changing doctors. In this way, the doctor treating them can get better information about the patient's state of health based on the medical history as well as current findings and images. According to the Federal Data Protection Act and the Civil Code, patients have the right to view their patient file at any time and “immediately”. Upon request, copies, printouts, patient CDs etc. must be made, but these may be subject to a charge. "Medical practices and clinics should make viewing the treatment file a matter of course for their patients," says Bitkom CEO Dr. Bernhard Rohleder.
