Imagine a device capable of capturing your medical data in real time, like an electrocardiogram. Imagine that athletes can use it to analyze their performance, that hospitals use it to monitoring the health of hundreds of patients at health home, continuously. Imagine that this device weighs no more than 17g and does not present any discomfort to its users. Imagine it’s just a t-shirt … No, it’s not science fiction. This is the Body connect.
It’s the embodiment of the future, the pinnacle of smart health connected clothing. You’ve never heard of it and yet in a few months, each of you will know this name: Body connect. In fact, it's a safe bet that if you came across one of these smart t-shirts today, you wouldn't notice it. Is that'in appearance, apart from the 17g chip hidden in the textile, the Body connect is nothing extraordinary. This fabric however overflows with nanotechnology that Laurent Fort and Benjamin Lanquar, its creators, name i-MVS.
A little history of a revolutionary product!
Laurent Fort and Benjamin lanquar, these are the two men behind this invention. The idea has existed in Laurent’s mind for seven years. In fact, most of the technological elements it used already existed at the time; the stroke of genius of this football enthusiast was to bring them together and miniaturize them to give birth to a new kind of product: the i-MVS (Intelligent monitoring Vital Signs). An invention that must have traveled a long way and sought the help of Benjamin Lanquar, a technology salesperson, before being born two years ago. Since, the information was killed because pending patent, then looking for investors and partners. The rest of the story, chances are you will see it with your own eyes. Indeed, Body Connect consumer marketing is scheduled for late 2020. Difficult to establish a price order, but its designers assure us that they will be within reach of all budgets.
How it works ?
Concretely, the Body connect t-shirt is made of intelligent fabric, stuffed with sensors able to record information about the person's heart, lungs and position (both body position and geographic location). Please note, we are not talking here of a simple heart rate reading, as dozens of heart rate monitors are capable of, but rather ofa real electrocardiogram. We are not talking about a lambda pedometer either, since the Body connect GPS is capable of locate your geographic position with a position of a few meters. As many technologies that are far from new, but which have always been incredibly bulky, users of heart rate monitors will be able to testify.
The advantage of Body connect is that its sensors will send all this information to an electronic chip housed in the fabric of the t-shirt, where it will not interfere with the user. Its weight: no more than 17g. Its reduced size does not prevent it fromsend received data, through Blutooth or Wi-Fi, to the smart health connected device, such as a smartphone, tablet or computer. These transfers of information are obviously encrypted and transmitted in real time, allowing a confidential, precise and live analysis.
For those who would like to address practical issues, know that this smart fabric is resistant and completely washable, which makes it reusable without ever altering the effectiveness of the integrated sensors. The chip ensures battery life of approximately five hours (but can extend up to a week for more casual athletes) and unplugged to envy for recharge via your computer.
What's the point ?
All right, it's all beautiful, but what can we record with Body connect? Many things in fact. The heartbeat, at rest or in effort, is just one piece of information. The study of behavior of each of the four heart ventricles, like a hospital electrocardiogram, would be a more precise term. This smart health connected t-shirt allows you to analyze your pace of recovery between two efforts and detects any form ofabnormality or heart failure. Ideal for those at risk who don't want to burden themselves with intrusive recording devices. The more athletic will also use it to measure their respiratory rate, thereenergy and calories expended, their speed or their stress or fatigue (power bar). Thanks to the position sensors, it is finally possible to determine whether the person is lying or standing, or know its geographic location specific.
A sports revolution…
Sport, of course, is one of the areas in which i-MVS will best find its place. If the sports enthusiasts will be able to acquire their own smart health connected t-shirt to get back in shape without taking risks, it is above all professionals who will find their account. It is usable in all sports, team or individual, amateur or professional, with the exception of swimming ("for the moment", they say, because a project is apparently in preparation). This allows each coach to monitoring data and performance of champions live, to better advise them. The doping screening will be even easier, and as the garment is particularly light and is not linked to any brand, it can be worn under sponsor t-shirts of the greatest athletes. As proof, footballers should already use it next season.
For team sports, things get a little more complicated. As many players are on the same surface and the coach must monitoring them all, several kiosks need to be installed around the stadium, to avoid duplicate information regardless of the user's position. In addition, the transmission of information will no longer be by Wi-Fi or Bluetooth but by a unique patented radio system. The game will nevertheless be worth the candle since thus, the coach will continuously keep an eye on the state of health of his athletes and as soon as one of them shows signs of fatigue, he will replace it more effectively. Obviously, this will also optimize the training of each player and measure their progress precisely. If you are still skeptical, know that a certain Guy Roux has looked into this technology and openly supports it. So if you see your favorite team’s coach staring at a tablet in future games, you’ll know why.
… And medical applications!
But it would be reductive to limit the i-MVS technology to the sole field of sport. Because if there is one thing that is certain, it is thatshe will save lives. In any case the doctor Pascal Cassan, advisor to the French Red Cross, places great hopes in this technology. Imagine, rather: an ordinary t-shirt capable of capturing and analyzing in real time all the medical data of the person wearing it. Without any discomfort, without wires and sensors that force you to stay in the hospital. So he could follow and monitoring the hearts of people at risk at health home, while a computer analyzes their data live and remotely. The sudden infant death will be notified immediately, by connecting the t-shirt to a computer or telephone which will sound an alarm in the event of danger. Its usefulness extends to the elderly, that we can watch over them. In addition, the position sensors can even indicate user falls. Parkinson and Alzheimer will become more easily detectable, and in the case of the latter, the Body connect GPS will even allow locate patients who go astray.
In short, the possibilities offered by i-MVS technology are endless, and we may not have considered all of them yet. What is certain is that you will hear about it and that the sports and medical landscapes will be turned upside down. For the better, no doubt.
