Bump, what if it was the announced end of the health record?

Students have imagined Bump, a smart health smart health connected object giving access to all our medical information to simplify the relationship with doctors. If the idea is interesting, it poses real questions in terms of data protection and privacy

Bump, the end of the health record?

The health record is an old French heritage that appeared at the end of the 19th century. It corresponds to a time when most of the inhabitants kept the same doctor throughout life. But this is no longer a reality. Today we are more mobile, we can see several doctors and our medical follow-up is therefore more complex.

ECE students have therefore developed Bump, a smart health connected alternative that may well be the health record of the future. It’s a simple badge that you can hang on your keychain. It is associated with a profile in a database. The doctor only has to access it with a receiver and fill in the information as it goes. Thus, the next practitioner can have access to the patient's medical information, know their history or even their allergies. If the patient is unconscious, a doctor can still access the information in a matter of moments. No more need to repeat a Review if recent results are available.

Data protection issues

Clearly the project has potential at the time of the dematerialization of procedures. Why not do the same thing with our medical records after all? But some obvious problems exist. First of all in terms of data protection. As we know, smart health connected objects are susceptible to hacking. However, we are not talking here about our sleep hours but about much more intimate data and with potentially more damaging consequences. Then, the example of We Vibe at the start of the year shows that companies like to keep our data. In this particular case, the commercial potential is obvious. Insurers but also many other companies would benefit from knowing everything about our health. Going further in smart health connected health can go in two different directions. Our acceptance of the monetization of our most private data on the one hand. On the other, really protective legislation.

At the moment Bump is still in the student project stage. But its creators are not lacking in ambition. After winning two successive awards, they managed to attract the attention of professionals but also of potential funding. They hope to be able to continue developing it in a year after finishing their studies. We will therefore have to wait to know what will become of our medical information.
