Cap Smart – A smart cap to replace the DLC

Cap Smart is a smart cap that detects when food has expired. This technology may one day replace the controversies Consumption Deadlines present on the vast majority of foodstuffs found in stores.

Cap Smart was developed by engineers from the University of Berkeley. The cap printed using a 3D printer is able to detect when food and drink is no longer consumable. Ideal if you're not the type to be careful when you open a bottle or other container.

In fact, it is the increase in bacteria levels that is detected. By detecting these changes, this smart plug will be able to react and inform the consumer. Nothing better to stop the controversy over the DLC that many consider to be more than approximate or manipulated by food companies. It is also a good solution also against food waste. According to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, up to 2 billion tonnes of food is thrown away each year – almost half the food produced in one year worldwide.

By informing people about the quality of food, in a certain way, and thus allowing them to be reassured when they eat or drink something, these figures should decrease. Well, of course, some tech-savvy people will tell you that using your nose to smell food is just as effective, but since this product is made using 3D printing, it is not very expensive to produce. It would be a shame to do without it!

Still at the research stage, Cap Smart still has a long way to go before arriving in our stores. In a few years, we should be able to see some developments in the shelves of our supermarkets and in particular the possibility of knowing exactly and directly on our smartphones what the products on the market contain.
