[CES 2020] Sony PlayStation VR exceeds 5 million units sold
[ad_1]
The current generation of game consoles is reaching the end of its life, with the already announced release of Sony's PlayStation 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Series X for the end of 2020. At its CES 2020 conference on January 6, Sony unveiled the logo of its next console and returned to the sales of the PlayStation 4. The latter totaled 106 million units sold as of December 31, 2019, according to the manufacturer's estimates. As for the PlayStation VR, its accessory for virtual reality released in the fall of 2016, it has now exceeded 5 million sales.
It is a very good performance for this accessory, even if it ultimately represents less than 5% of total PS4 sales. Based on official figures given by Sony for 3 years, sales of PSVR seem to slow, but it has easily dominated its competition on PC (Oculus Rift and HTC Vive) in the last three years, despite features lower. A success due to the quality of the PlayStation ecosystem and the exclusive games produced by Sony studios.
Its main competitor to date is the Oculus Quest, a standalone helmet which should supplant it in 2020 thanks to a well-stocked library of titles, greater ease of use and undeniable technological superiority. The release of the PlayStation VR 2 in 2020 is unlikely, Sony already having enough to do with the launch of the PlayStation 5. However, we can assume without much risk that it will be presented in 2021. To be patient, players can continue to use the first generation PSVR with the new console.
