[CES 2023] German Bionic unveils a new exoskeleton and a connected vest

Tools to help employees in physically demanding jobs are growing. German Bionic, a German start-up specializing in exoskeletons, unveils its new products at CES in Las Vegas. She presents Apogee, a new version of her exoskeleton Cray X, as well as a vest allowing to collect a lot of data.

Up to 30 kg of assistance

The German start-up, known for its Cray X exoskeleton, unveils Apogee. This new exoskeleton intended for the professional world is lighter and more comfortable than its predecessors. Water and dust resistant, it offers up to 30 kg of lifting assistance and minimizes fatigue with an active walking assistance system. The exoskeleton can be used in various sectors like logistics, construction, health, etc.

Beyond the exoskeleton, the German start-up is unveiling a smart 'Smart SafetyVest' designed for everyone. This does not provide active assistance, but is equipped with sensors to provide personalized data on posture or ergonomics. German Bionic talks about ergonomic protection. With the data collected, actions and positions are recommended to reduce fatigue and the risk of injury regardless of the type of work performed.

A cloud platform

These smart clothes are connected to the cloud-based German Bionic IO platform which collects data and measures different factors concerning health or safety. The idea is to detect risks, trends and optimize processes. The on-board assistant, the Smart Safety Companion, is equipped with artificial intelligence technologies that make it possible to set up an alert system in the event of bad postures or incorrect lifting. The idea is to limit injuries by preventing fatigue and possible errors. German Bionic does not specify whether these new products are already on the market or will be soon.

Beyond the German start-up, the French Wandercraft or Japet are also working on such technology. Exoskeletons are increasingly being tested by manufacturers seeking to meet a real need. For example, the RATP is equipped with equipment to relieve agents on physically demanding tasks and has been testing exoskeletons for several months. The Foch hospital has acquired four exoskeletons, robotic lumbar belts, to fight against low back pain in caregivers.
