Spotify and Alexa – that's what it takes

Music streaming via Spotify can be easily integrated into the smart health home with Amazon's voice assistant Alexa. Requirement is:

  • Alexa-enabled device

  • Spotify Premium Account (the free version cannot yet be integrated)

Alexa can only be smart health connected to Spotify Premium accounts

Here's how it works: Set up Spotify in the Alexa app

  • To connect Spotify to Alexa, select "Music and Media" in the Alexa app under "Settings / Accounts" under the available services such as Amazon Music and TuneIn Spotify.

For shorter voice commands: set Spotify as the default music service in the Alexa app

If you use Spotify exclusively or mainly as a streaming service for your favorite music, you can set Spotify as the standard music service and save yourself the additional "from Spotify" when you issue a voice command. Alexa will then delegate any inquiries about tracks or playlists directly to Spotify. Example of the voice command with Spotify as the standard music service: "Alexa, start playlist Review in the bedroom", the command without Spotify as the standard music service: "Alexa, start playlist Review from Spotify in the bedroom".

Not only is voice control much easier with Alexa, it also makes the DJ: suggest and play playlists, name tracks and call up genres, Amazon's digital assistant does all of this. Here are some useful voice commands for Spotify:

What can music streaming do with Spotify and Alexa?

In practice, the interaction is sometimes difficult – when the music is played loudly, Alexa doesn't understand anything anymore, otherwise she often wants to misunderstand instructions and plays Tyrolean mountain music instead of the Christmas playlist. Like every assistant, Alexa takes her time to get used to getting used to the user's pronunciation and music preferences.
