Consumers want to make Nutri-Score mandatory

 September 22, 2019

The nutri-score, launched in 2016, is attracting more and more consumers to the point that they would like to make it compulsory.

Nutritional labeling on all products

In a column at the Parisien-Aujourd’hui in France, health professionals, learned societies and associations of consumers and patients demand that Nutri-Score nutritional labeling be mandatory. The 5-color system, from A to E and from green to red, establishes the nutritional quality of processed food products.

The associations call on citizens to sign the European citizen initiative Pronutriscore created to make the affixing of the Nutri-Score nutritional logo mandatory on the packaging of food products in Europe. So that the European executive can take a decision, one million signatures are required according to European legislation. You can sign the petition via the Commission's official website www.pronutriscore.org.

Food, essential for good health

Nutri-score labeling would therefore give consumers all the information they need to choose the best processed food products. Food has an important impact on the development of diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, obesity, but also diabetes and cancer. Good nutrition can also limit the risk of developing one of these diseases. The ideal is to eat unprocessed food.

The information currently on product packaging is difficult to understand, sometimes illegible, and can mislead the consumer. According to an OpinionWay survey, 62% of French people consider the indications not very transparent. However, mandatory labeling of easily understandable processed food products would allow better prevention in the face of these risks.
