Cosmetic surgery: how long does it take?

Anti-wrinkle injections, how long do they last?

With botulinum toxin: from 4 to 6 months

In theory : Type A botulinum toxins, which temporarily prevent muscle contraction, have a duration of action of four to six months.

We could increase the dose while remaining very safe, but it is unsightly to completely block a muscle and freeze the expressions!

In practice : The first year, a minimum of two sessions are required. “But the following years, we can space out to one a year, for the same result”, notes Dr. Thierry Michaud, dermatologist.

With hyaluronic acids: more than 12 months

In theory : Today there are different densities of hyaluronic acid, depending on the areas to be treated and according to the laboratories. Hyaluronic acids fill in wrinkles and plump up.

Several clinical studies* have demonstrated that the correction lasts for twelve months for the lips and for eighteen months for the cheekbones and the furrows that go from the nose to the mouth.

In practice :“If we don’t protect ourselves from the sun, tobacco and pollution, we reduce the lifespan of the injected hyaluronic acid, which is sensitive to external aggressions, just like that which is naturally present in the skin”, adds Thierry Michaud.

A smoker will therefore have to go more regularly to her dermatologist, especially if she makes injections around the mouth.

Lasting result with grease

In theory :“The fat injections are permanent because it is an autologous living cell transplant. They will live at the place of the transplant, as they would have lived at the place where they were removed,” explains Dr François Niforos, plastic surgeon.

In practice : On average, 30% of fat cells are lost in the first six months, this is a normal reaction and the surgeon must inform you of this. A second injection is possible if you want to increase the volume. “But over time, or after significant weight loss, the fat reinjected like the native fat, without any distinction, melts away. »

Skin treatments, how long do they last?

The anti-stain laser is definitive

In theory : According to Dr. Michaud, “sun-related pigment spots are removed with Q-switch lasers in one session. The result is permanent and the spots do not return to the treated area”.

In practice : “New spots can emerge, it depends on our exposure time and our sun capital, says the dermatologist. To prevent their appearance, it is imperative to expose yourself as little as possible and with 50 SPF protection! »

Superficial peeling, beautiful skin for 6 months

In theory : Five sessions, each spaced fifteen days apart, lighten and illuminate the complexion, tighten the pores, and this for a visible result six months on average.

In practice :“It’s an interesting treatment for young skin, since it only affects the superficial part of the dermis. But we have to renew the operation every year to keep the benefits,” warns Dr. Michaud.

The medium peel, 1 to 2 years

In theory : With this peeling which affects the areas located under the stratum corneum of the epidermis, we are calm for one to two years. In one session, it acts on acne scars, slackening, tone and radiance of the complexion. This treatment has no effect on wrinkles.

In practice :“You improve your longevity with a cosmetic follow-up with fruit acids at home, and a lifestyle without tobacco or sun”, adds Thierry Michaud.

Liposuction, a permanent removal of fat

In theory :“The so-called energy reserve fats that have been there for a long time and cannot be dislodged with exercise or diet are permanently removed. They do not come back, regardless of the area,” says Dr. Nicolas Georgieu, plastic surgeon.

On the other hand, it happens that people gain weight, either by a bad lifestyle, or because of hormones, after a pregnancy… And in this case, the remaining cells store fat again… and expand.

In practice : According to Max Lafontan, director of research at Inserm, the return of fat seems inevitable for everyone. “We renew on average 10% of our adipocytes per year: stem cells and preadipocytes then replace the dead cells. Additionally, there may be compensation in other areas of the body such as the abdominal area. »

In other words, we can resume in other areas, not treated by liposuction. According to some recent studies*, only regular physical activity can limit the importance of these new bulges.

Breast prostheses, from 10 to 15 years of life

In theory :“We do not change breast prostheses that seem intact on ultrasound”, says Dr. Isabelle Sarfati, plastic surgeon. The condition of the implants is monitored with a control mammogram every five years before the age of 40, and every three years after the age of 40. An ultrasound can be associated with it.

“According to various studies, there are approximately 10 to 15% of ruptured prostheses and the appearance of a shell at ten years. » In this case, the majority of laboratories insure their prostheses, but only up to €1,000, in compensation for clinical and surgical costs.

In practice :“In general, the prostheses should be changed every ten to fifteen years, says Dr Sarfati, either because they will be worn out, or because in the meantime, the woman’s silhouette will have changed. »

The facelift, a noticeable result 10 to 15 years

In theory :“A facelift generally lasts ten years”, says Dr. Georgieu. It is the time necessary for the skin and the muscles to show again the passing years.

In practice : Despite the facelift, our overall aging continues. Doctors and surgeons are now relying on aesthetic medicine (injection, radiofrequency) to improve the quality of the skin and allow the facelift to be maintained as well as possible, or even to be prolonged. “In the case of a blepharoplasty that corrects droopy eyelids, the excess skin does not come back once the operation is done. »
