He chaired what then became the GCS e-santé Midi-Pyrénées, before being named honorary president of the new public interest group (GIP) e-health Occitanie.

In January 2018, the founding institutions of the future University of Toulouse (Universities Toulouse-Jean Jaurès and Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier, Toulouse INP, Insa Toulouse and Comue University Toulouse Midi-Pyrénées) had paid tribute common to Professor Louis Lareng, who was also the first president of the University Toulouse III – Paul Sabatier.

He was also engaged in politics, being a member of Parliament from 1981 to 1986 and a Toulouse city councilor from 1983 to 1995. In 2016, Louis Lareng was promoted to the dignity of Grand'Croix in the Order of the Legion of Honor.

In a statement published on November 3, Ghislaine Alajouanine, President of the French High Council for Telehealth and the French Academy of Telemedicine and e-Health, paid tribute to "a pioneer and a visionary of telemedicine".
