A stiffness is a muscle pain which can manifest:

  • after a effort prolonged, within 12 to 48 hours, generally when the body is not used to the exercise practiced. These aches gradually fade in the week following the effort;

  • after immobility in an uncomfortable position;

  • as symptom of a disease: syndrome influenza, chikungunya, dengue…

The curvature is due to microtrauma or microlesions of the muscle fibers, which triggers an inflammatory reaction and pain. Contrary to popular belief, body aches are not due to the accumulation ofLactic acid in the muscle. Muscle contraction requireshydrolysis of molecules ofATP to provideenergy. During intense and long exercise, one of the ways used to make ATP is anaerobic glycogenolysis which in return produces lactate which accumulates in the cytoplasm. This lactate will be oxidized or will serve to replenish the reserves of glycogen. Body aches are unrelated to the buildup of lactate in the muscle.

Prevent and treat aches

Aches are annoying on a daily basis and can make certain activities more difficult. Better to avoid them! Here are a few tips :

  • if you have not exercised for a long time, start with a moderate activity such as walking, and avoid using only one type of muscle (for example weight training);

  • gradually increase the intensity of the exercise;

  • warm up for ten minutes before starting a workout;

  • once your sport is finished, walk and stretch for ten minutes;

  • drink somewater before, during and after exercise.

If the aches persist despite everything, you can relieve them by taking a bath, by massaging yourself, by applying preparations that relieve muscle pain. Consult your pharmacist.
