Digital well-being: focus mode comes to Android

A focus mode has just entered the catalog of tools of "digital well-being" offered by Google on Android. His interest is simple: it allows to pause distracting applications to better focus.

Aware of the addiction that the smartphone can add to some users, Google continues to work on solutions to help everyone better manage their interactions with Android. This week, the giant announces the release of beta and therefore the widespread availability on Android 9 (Pie) and Android 10 of its new tool of "digital well-being": the focus mode. As the name may suggest, it is with this mode of contributing to the concentration of the user. To do this, Google offers to block certain applications for a set time.

Specifically, the owner of the smartphone (or tablet) must first select applications that may be distractions (social networks, games …). Once the mode is activated, if it tries to open one of them, the device simply refuses and displays a message reminding it that it is supposed to focus on something else, that it whether to study, work or just pick up your smartphone.

Naturally, it is possible to disable focus mode. Following feedback from beta users, Google has even introduced several variants. In addition to the pure and simple deactivation of the mode, it is for example possible to take a break of 5, 15 or 30 minutes. A programming option also made his appearance, allowing to cut the whistle to applications too distracting automatically during his working hours or courses on the desired days.
