Dosime, a portable Geiger counter for the apocalypse

[ad_1]

The end of the world will come one day. As the Fukushima and Chernobyl accidents have shown, nuclear power is far from safe. So how will you do in case of accident or nuclear war? How will you be able to know which areas are contaminated and which areas are safe? It is to answer these existential questions that exists Dosime, a radiation detector, presented at CES 2017. In the shorter term, the small device, a real pocket Geiger counter can be useful if you live near a risky site.

Change the world around you

Would we be becoming more aware of the dangers around us? Or is it rather what some manufacturers of smart health connected objects are hoping for? After "Flow", the pollution detector unveiled by Plume Labs, here is Dosime. A product presented by the company Mirion Technologies, specializing in radiation on the occasion of T. Its use? This smart health connected "pebble" can detect and report the real-time presence of radiation in your health home or around you.

When activated, Dosime analyzes the air around you every four seconds and sends the data in Bluetooth directly to your smartphone through an Android application. If results are too high, it sends you an alert immediately. Dosime can detect X-rays and gamma rays.

A gadget? For Thomas Logan, the CEO of Mirion Technologies the goal of Dosime is broader. "All you can measure, you can change it" he explains in a statement. For him, the tool could be used to help people change their lifestyle. Indeed, the application also offers an analysis on your hourly exposure to radiation. So, if you spend too much time with the X-ray machine in your hospital, the application will tell you that it is not really recommended. He also hopes that Dosime could encourage its users to clean the environment and become pro-active on these issues.

Dosime, a special apocalypse detector

We will be honest. Dosime looks more like a gadget than anything else for the general public. Hard to imagine regular use for most people. It could potentially be of interest to those living near sites that have already been irradiated and do not want to take risks. We also think of environmental organizations that want to launch the alert on ultra-localized problems. Beyond these uses, Dosime is rather an investment that you can do "just in case". You never know after all, the end of the world may be for tomorrow.

The device is not yet available for sale. But it should be possible to pre-order it on Amazon in the next few days. The advertised price is $ 249.
