In practice, the Echo Dot with clock launched on the market in 2019 was also easy to set up using the Alexa app. We found the announcement of several facility information in four languages ​​in a row somewhat annoying. This could have been solved if the desired language had been adjustable right at the start of the installation.

Despite this small shortcoming, the Dot loudspeaker with clock was ready to go after a few minutes. The subsequent voice control of timers worked just as smoothly as the retrieval of temperature data. When the volume was changed, the corresponding volume level was conveniently displayed via LED.

Incidentally, the Echo Dot tested here is doing particularly well on the bedside table. There, a light tap on the top of the device is enough to activate the snooze function. In addition, the brightness of the display adjusts itself during the day and at night. On the other hand, if you don't value optical information displays, you can instead choose the previous model Echo Dot 3 (2018) and save up to 50 euros.

Conclusion: Overall, the Echo Dot with watch is an all-rounder that has something to offer everyone. It doesn't matter whether it's a smart health home owner with dozens of Alexa-compatible devices or a gadget fan who just wants to be told jokes and listen to music. Only the price is a bit of a downside because it turns out to be significantly higher than the previous model.

What are the differences between the 2018 and 2019 versions besides the clock?

Visually, the Echo Dot we tested is very similar to the previous model. Because not only the dimensions of the compact smart speaker have remained the same: the 41 mm speaker and a 3.5 mm audio output have also been adopted by Echo Dot 3 (2018) and are also installed in the 4th generation.

So everything the same? No, the Echo Dot with clock can also show the temperature, the volume level or an alarm directly on the housing via LED display.
