Emmanuel Gadenne: the evolution of Quantified Self

[ad_1]

Emmanuel Gadenne became known thanks to his book The practical guide to Quantified Self. Today manager of smart health connected objects at Sopra Steria Consulting, he gives us his vision of the smart health connected objects market and more specifically Quantified Self. Interview.

For novices, Quantified Self is an English term that means self-measurement. It brings together the tools, principles and methods that allow you to measure your personal data, analyze it and share it. smart health connected objects are obviously at the heart of this trend.

Where is the market?

"In the past, historic players like Fitbit and Jawbone have tried to democratize their activity sensors and have succeeded in reaching the general public. Today, we see more and more the emergence of suppliers who offer a range of diverse objects (Withings, Netatmo, Parrot, etc.). In the market for smart health connected bracelets, for example, a new brand that wants to be pure player has almost no chance of success, unless it puts its technology at the service of a big brand like Adidas.

The current trend is to the integration of the technological aspect in classic objects like the watch, which is a differentiating and personal object, as opposed to the smart health connected bracelet. That's all of the work that Withings has done on the Activity. On this point, Emmanuel Gadenne joins the observation made by Pierre Garner in our interview on the design of smart health connected objects.

Many activity sensors are found in the closet, how to reverse this trend?

"To take the example of Fitbit, the social aspect is very much emphasized in the app. Gamification is an important lever for loyalty. We even go so far as to seek new "friends" outside of our own circle to challenge ourselves.

Design is also paramount. An aesthetic interface or infographics to format the data can help the user to be persistent in the effort. There is also a real need to correlate data with each other, to give advice to users on how to improve. Once this milestone has passed, the data becomes a benchmark against which to compare yourself. "

There are more and more products in the heartbeat, is it really useful?

"It is an excellent health indicator. The resting heart rate gives indications of the stress level and physical condition in particular. This index is therefore relevant, especially if we can correlate it with other data (activity, weight, nutrition, etc.). "

What place for large groups in Quantified Self?

“Giants like Apple and Google are already very present. Smartphones already allow scalable systems thanks to applications. We connect a blood pressure monitoring, a bracelet, a balance, etc. Today these two players also offer their own data aggregation platforms with Google Fit and Healthkit. The whole ecosystem already revolves around them. Facebook also has a card to play.

Some, like pharmaceutical companies could benefit from it. For some time these large labs could, for example, offer a smart health connected pill box if the patient chooses their medication for long-term treatment. New business models will emerge thanks to smart health connected objects and the Internet of Things. "

Many thanks to Emmanuel Gadenne for this interview. See you next Friday for a new interview with a market player.
