Estrus Detection System for Cattle
Estrus Detection System for Cattle, or ESDC for short, is a small wearable for … cows! Fujitsu developed this tracker to help farmers closely monitoring their female cattle during pregnancy.
Estrus Detection System for Cattle was presented at the MWC 2016 in Barcelona. This Orange tracker is essentially a pedometer. To use it, just attach it around the cow's ankle. It works in pair with a receiver to be installed in the neighboring barn.
Hourly movement data is analyzed by Fujitsu data centers after being sent to the cloud and then sent back to the farmer on a tablet, smartphone or PC. Farmers can therefore accurately detect oestrus, the appropriate time for artificial insemination. This time is very short since the fertility period of the cow is about 16 hours.
Estrus Detection System for Cattle, or ESDC, will therefore improve conception rates and reduce burdens on farmers. It can also detect diseases at an early stage. This wearable for cows has been under study since 2013 and is already used in Japan and Korea. Farmers have seen a noticeable improvement in pregnancy rates.
Inside, the battery is gigantic and offers a lifespan of 3 years! Farmers will therefore not have to take risks every morning to recharge their cows' wristbands.
Currently, the society is also currently experimenting with its portable technology in Europe, particularly in Turkey and Romania. So you're wondering if you're going to come across this big wearable soon at the ankles of other animals. Well, it’s unlikely! Certain tests have been carried out on other animals without giving conclusive results. At the moment, it only works on cows.
