Face recognition glasses for police

China has just made an announcement that will make a lot of noise: its police officers will soon all be equipped with facial recognition glasses built by the company LLVision Technology.

LLVision Technology's glasses are currently being tested at Zhengzhou stations. Travelers at stations will be scanned using a database of people with criminal records. Taking the form of sunglasses, according to Chinese police, this new device has already allowed the arrest of seven suspects wanted in major cases and twenty-six other people traveling under false identities.

The Wall Street Journal also explains that LLVision Technology chief executive Wu Fei is working with the police to adapt the device to the needs of law enforcement. Although ehealth surveillance cameras are widespread in the country, this type of device would be necessary to compensate for the low resolution of these cameras, which make the use of facial recognition technology difficult.

"The police can use these wearables anywhere," Wu Fei told WSJ. "By manufacturing wearable glasses with artificial intelligence, we can provide instant and precise feedback. You just have to decide what to do next. "

LLVision claims that its device is capable of scanning individuals from a preloaded database of 10,000 suspects in just 100 milliseconds, although the accuracy of use of the glasses depends on the surrounding noise. Naturally, there are also concerns about confidentiality, since technology gives new powers of surveillance to the state.

With the arrival of the Lunar New Year, which is the largest human migration in the world, it is easy to understand why this technology is implemented just before this event. However, it remains to be seen what the success rate for this type of wearable will be.
