Fashion Illustration Tutorial: How to Create a Mockup

Learn how to create a mockup in Photoshop with Robert Tirado

When it comes to editorial layout, it’s important to test our artwork and photography on the finished product. Will these two images go well together in the layout? Does this cover work? Mockups help answer these questions before going to print.

In the following video tutorial, illustrator and art director Robert Tirado (@roberttirado) shows us how to make an editorial mockup and integrate your illustrations seamlessly into it. Learn more below:

What is a model?

A mockup is a layout template that allows us to place our illustrations or photographs in the edition of a magazine or other type of publication. There are many mockups available online for download.

Remember that mockups exist not only in the world of publishing, but also in any type of creation such as the design of a T-shirt or even a project with a photo or an illustration.

Once we find a mockup we like, we just need to download it and open it in Adobe Photoshop. We are then ready to publish it!

Creation of a cover page in harmony with our illustrations.

In general, the mockups are in .psd format and are organized in layers to facilitate the work. To start testing how our artwork looks, just open one in Photoshop and save it as a .jpg at 2000px.

Once we have saved our artwork in .jpg format, we can drag it to the layer of the mockup where we want it to appear. For example, if we want to test it on the cover, we click on the thumbnail in the layers menu on the right side of our workstation and it will open a menu only for the cover. We then drag the artwork here and make size and design adjustments to fit the cover.

If, for example, we want to keep the magazine logo on the test cover, here’s how: we select it and we apply a layer mask to it so that we only keep the selected part. Then all we have to do is close the cover window and save the changes.

Work the inside pages.

Using the process we just detailed, we can continue to test how our illustrations or photos look on the inside pages. Have fun testing and editing your images where they look best in the layout.

You can also add graphic elements like spots, strokes with interesting textures using the brush tool or other details from your illustrations or photos. You will also be able to see how the elements fit together in the mockup.

Print your images.

If you want to print your mockup to see what it looks like, it is recommended to change the color mode to CMYK in the top toolbar and save your images in .TIF format.
