Fight against school failure in the United States

How to fight against school failure among minority communities? The National High School Summit held in Washington, DC was intended to answer this question.

In the United States the educational gap between whites and minority communities is widening. The black and Hispanic communities experience a high rate of school failure. Hence the initiative of the “National High School” summit. The key theme of this major meeting is to know by what means it is possible to fight against school failure among minorities, but also how to reduce the educational gap with the rest of American schools.

The problem is not so much the school results of minorities as absenteeism. Principal Earl Watkins of Jackson City Elementary School points out that during a school year minority children spend only 17% of their time in school. The remaining 83% are at home, in their community.

To fight against school failure, one of the objectives of this summit is to develop a strategy to encourage children from minorities to go to school as regularly as possible, and above all to interest them in learning, learn. How to develop this strategy? By taking the example of schools which have already thought about the question and which have put a program in place. This is the case, for example, of the “El Camino” high school in California, which has been working and acting on the issue for more than 20 years, and whose principal was honored during this summit. His philosophy is very simple: for him, school failure is not a matter of fate. School failure is certainly not easy to fight, it requires patience and commitment.
