More than a year and a half after its Fitbit Charge 3, the American company offers a successor to its activity sensor. Called "Fitbit Charge 4", it brings a long-awaited novelty: the integrated GPS.

After a Charge 3 sensor already dating from 2018, it was time for Fitbit to announce the release of a new model. The American company lifts the veil today on the Charge 4, an activity sensor that looks like two drops of water to the previous ones, but which brings its small batch of novelties.

More precise monitoring thanks to the integrated GPS

The great strength of this new version of the Fitbit bracelet is the integration of a GPS. In fact, we no longer need to take our phone in our pocket when we go running for example. The company indicates that 7 sports work hand in hand with GPS such as brisk walking, climbing or even running. This GPS not only tracks movements, but it also measures the intensity of the effort that is provided. In fact, by synchronizing the watch with its application, it is possible to obtain a heat map which, according to Fitbit, can be used to analyze and then improve user performance.

In addition to GPS, a new feature is embedded in this activity sensor. It is called "Minutes in active zones" and is responsible for monitoring all physical activities that increase the heart rate. Whether the effort is intense or not. Fitbit explains that the feature measures the time spent in each heart rate zone to reach the target of 150 minutes set by the WHO. Obviously a weekly goal, valid for exercises requiring moderate physical effort. For practitioners of more intense efforts, the objective is reduced to 75 minutes weekly. This new feature is responsible for analyzing activities automatically and does not hesitate to send a notification each time the user changes the zone (or intensity) to allow him to better control his efforts and his sessions. Note that this function will be exclusive to Charge 4 initially, then will be deployed on the firm's other activity sensors.

Extensive sleep measurement and contactless payment

Fitbit finally integrates the smart alarm clock on its small sensor whereas it was until now a function reserved for smart health connected watches. If you are one of the people who sleep with their watch, then the Charge 4 will learn about your sleep and wake patterns to wake you up at the best possible time. It will also be possible to analyze your sleep cycle using the app. Finally, the Fitbit Charge 4 incorporates a SpO2 sensor. The latter gives an estimate of the variations in the rate of oxygen saturation in the blood, which makes it possible to monitoring if one suffers from respiratory sleep disorders.

But the Charge 4 will not only be useful during physical activity or sleep, but also on a daily basis. For this, the sensor directly integrates Spotify (which requires a Premium account to operate), in addition to all the functions specific to a smart health connected bracelet such as notifications, the display of messages on its screen or even quick responses. Fitbit Pay is also present on Charge 4 and allows contactless payments to be made. Fitbit announces a partnership with 500 banking establishments in 44 countries.

The autonomy, which remains an important data with this kind of product is rather correct. The firm announces 7 days, as for the previous version. The sensor will be available from April 15 at a price of € 149.95. A special version is also planned for 20 € more. Confinement obliges, Fitbit announces to offer 90 days of access to its Fitbit Coach tool, to exercise while staying at health home.
