FitBit has completed its clinical phase of sleep apnea
Mentioned for several years, FitBit announces that it has completed its clinical trials on sleep apnea. Its smart health connected accessories should thus detect this disorder in the more or less near future.
On the sidelines of its event where it presented the new Versa 2 watch, FitBit also took the opportunity to announce the end of his clinical tests on the detection of sleep apnea. It's been a while since the manufacturer of fitness bracelets promised to add this feature to its products. Indeed, as early as 2017, the CEO of FitBit James Park, had shown his interest in this sleep disorder caused by bad breathing.
Sleep apnea results in involuntary breathing stops while sleeping. They can last between 10 and 30 seconds. To detect them, polysomnography is most often used, a medical examination that can determine sleep disorders. But FitBit thinks that there is not necessarily all this paraphernalia, but thata simple SpO2 sensor, that is, estimating the amount of oxygen in the blood, can do the job. The advantage being that this sensor is already present on some products recent brand. FitBit, however, requires prior approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) before it can be used for these purposes.
A still long process for FitBit
The tests are finished, so this is more than a matter of time before you get the sesame, as James Park says. He did not say, however, whether it was going to be long or short. Only that as a result ofan update that should arrive this fall, FitBit watches and bracelets equipped with an SpO2 sensor will display new information about changes in oxygen levels. So their users can know how much oxygen is in their blood at different times of the day and night. But that will not be able to warn of a possible trouble, and will only give raw data.
It is the first step desired by FitBit to gather information and see how the system is evolving. And maybe eventually, and once all the agreements have been reached, their smart health connected accessories will be able to give opinions and advice more. Unfortunately, we will have to wait a little longer.
