Fitbit Ionic – new fitness smartwatch with 4-day battery

Fitbit merges with its new Ionic smartwatch and fitness tracker. The watch is reminiscent of smartwatches in terms of design and features, but has many fitness functions and works even without a smartphone.

Fitbit is showing a new product portfolio today to mark its tenth anniversary. The most important component is the Ionic, there is also a wireless headset and a smart scale – a smart scale.

Fitbit Ionic

At first glance, the Ionic looks more like a smart health watch à la Apple Watch than a fitness tracker. Responsible for this is the aluminum housing with the large color touchscreen, which is protected by Gorilla Glass. The equipment is also very generous for a fitness tracker: thanks to the integrated GPS and its own memory, the Ionic works during sports without a smartphone connection, plays MP3 music via Bluetooth and has an integrated heart rate monitoring.

Although the Ionic is not based on Android Wear, but has a proprietary operating system, it should have its own app store. Time will tell whether Fitbit manages to find enough developers to fill the app store. Compared to other smartwatches, the battery life is gigantic: the new Fitbit watch should last up to four days at a time. We will soon determine whether this value also corresponds to practice in a Review.

A new software called Fitbit Coach should behave like a human fitness trainer and adapt the training program to the needs and abilities of the user.

Otherwise, the dual antenna for GPS is worth mentioning. It is intended to enable extremely precise location and thus enable precise speed and distance, for example when jogging. Swimmers also get their money’s worth, because the Ionic is waterproof to a depth of 50 meters.

Fitbit flyer

In addition to the smartwatch, Fitbit is still introducing the wireless earphone flyer. They are specially designed for the needs of joggers and athletes: two earplugs that are smart health connected with cables in the neck, no heavy technology, everything integrated. They are water and sweat proof.

With one battery charge, they should work 6 hours at a time and be quickly recharged. Every earphone comes with a microphone. If you connect the flyers directly to the Ionic, you can access the 2.5 GB MP3 collection of the smartwatch, otherwise the flyers can of course also be smart health connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth.

Fitbit Aria 2

The third product announcement just before the IFA is the Aria 2 – a new version of the body scale. Once set up using a smartphone app, the Smart Scale is smart health connected to the Internet via WLAN. It measures weight, body fat for up to eight users and calculates the body mass index and synchronizes itself with apps on the smartphone and with fitness trackers from the same manufacturer.

The data is stored in the cloud, but should be protected against prying eyes – at least the users of a scale cannot view the profiles of the other users. The Aria 2 is said to last one year with one battery charge.
