five things to know before you jump

Brittany or the South West. Corsica or the Alps. When it comes to choosing the best place to parachute, everyone has their own opinion. Advice on how to prepare well, however, is fairly universal.

Parachute jump. The idea rarely leaves you indifferent. Some ask few questions and think above all about thrills waiting for them. Others are more worried. But be reassured, the baptisms are done in tandem jump, from a plane – and more rarely from a helicopter – accompanied by monitoring experienced and state certified, preferably. Even if you have had the right, before your jump, to a briefing presenting all the safety instructions in particular, it is the instructor who will be responsible for controlling the descent and the trajectory, the opening of the parachute and landing. For the rest, here are some things to know before you take the plunge.

Conditions related to age, weight …

First of all, know that people under 18 will need parental authorization before launching into the void. Some centers even refuse jumps to young people under the age of 15. Especially since a minimum size of 40 kg is generally required, however. By the way, also note that the maximum weight accepted for a tandem jump is usually 90 to 95 kg, unless the instructor accompanying you is particularly light.

… and physical fitness

To jump by parachute, you must still be in healthy. Even if you don't need to be in shape physical of a top athlete. Among the contraindications: pregnancies, of course, ENT problems related to decompression, heart problems or pains at back. Either way, most centers will ask you for a certificate no contraindication signed by your doctor. It is therefore he who will tell you if you are physically able to jump or not.

Some precautions to take

Regarding more specific health issues, note that it is better to avoid throwing yourself into the void the day after an experience of scuba diving. Or even less than 12 hours after consumingalcohol. However, remember to eat before the jump, because the experience will require strength. Avoid fatty foods and prefer foods rich in vitamins and in sugars slow.

How to dress ?

On the clothing side, do not hesitate to wear slightly warm clothes, because at altitude, the temperature is low, even in summer. Glasses are allowed, although it is best to wear contact lenses. Either way, both will be covered by fall goggles. Note, however, that lace-up shoes are prohibited because they are too difficult to remove in flight if necessary. For the rest, all that is technical material is of course provided by the center which organizes the jump.

Skydiving all year round

Finally, note that parachute jumps are in theory possible throughout the year, preferably at Sunrise or at bedtime. Even if some centers choose to close from November to March. However, if the weather is unfavorable (clouds, mists, rain, etc.), the aircraft will remain grounded. And anyway, to get the most out of the jump, better than the Sun shines.
