Flamenco, or the invitation to travel

When we talk about flamenco, our mind escapes to Spain, more precisely to Andalusia where it comes from. The sounds of rhythmic and intense music resonate in our ears.

The National Dance Theater of Chaillot offers us, on the occasion of the Biennial of flamenco art, to get out of our daily life for the time of a show and to appreciate rhythms and exciting adventures.

Flamenco, a universal art

Flamenco is an artistic expression articulated around singing, guitar and dance. It is characterized by a great variety of styles, the palos.

Singing, cant, is powerful. It tells a story, expresses deep feelings like sadness, joy, love, suffering and sometimes melancholy. It is accompanied by guitar and rhythmic handclaps, the palms.

Dance, lease, is individual. The dancer to the sound of the music exteriorizes, through his gestures, the deep emotions expressed by the musicians.

Flamenco is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Like a language rich in subtleties and expression, it touches all souls.

Flamenco source of stories and ground of exploration

Dance is a way to tell stories, to go back in time, to rewrite myths, as Rafaela Carrasco proposes in her interpretation of the Greek myth of Ariadne, Ariadna [al hilo del mito], presented at the Biennale. The dancer evokes the labyrinth as a symbol of our deep fears. The various paintings make us follow the evolution of the character of Ariane towards the light, the discovery of herself and her independence.

Flamenco occasionally merges with other genres of music, such as hip hop. On the occasion of the Biennale, the dancers David Coria (flamenco) and Jann Gallois (hip hop) offer an unexpected encounter between these two genres. From this association is born a hybrid project, a double artistic language and a dialogue between two different cultures.

Maestro Farruquito offers to dive into the heart of the roots of flamenco in his show Intimo. Coming from a large flamenco family of the gypsy tradition, he offers a dance imbued with passion and elegance.

A very rich Biennial at Chaillot

Whether you are curious, amateur or passionate, whether you are more sensitive to dance or music, each spectator will find the show that suits them.

Music lovers will particularly appreciate the refined and intense playing of the immense Rafael Riqueni. The composer offers nerjaa tale that evokes the exploration of the Andalusian cave of the same name by young Spaniards in 1959.

Shows to discover until February 18, 2022, Chaillot National Dance Theater in Paris
