Flow Velociti Wind 2 – Under Armor smart health connected Running Shoes

Under Armor has unveiled the Flow Velociti Wind 2. These new smart health connected running shoes track and analyze your runs, and sync data with the Map My Run smartphone app. A lightweight sensor built into the right shoe collects data as you run; then transmits them to your phone via Bluetooth.

Under Armor has been researching and manufacturing smart health connected running shoes since 2010. The UA Flow Velociti Wind 2 (pictured above) follows on from last year’s Flow Veclociti Wind. Unlike most running shoes, which have a rubber outsole, the Flow Velociti Wind Series has an all-in-one cushioning design. Also, outsole for more traction and less weight.

The second generation of shoes also features a redesigned heel system, intended to provide more consistent lockdown at the rear of the shoe; as well as a molded EVA sock liner, designed to be more durable for long training sessions. It will be marketed worldwide in the first quarter of 2023 for 160 dollars.

The UA HOVR Machina 3 is a neutral performance shoe for racing and distance training. The third generation version has a redesigned midsole that is firmer and more responsive in the forefoot for faster running.

Like the new Flow Velociti Wind, it also features an updated heel capture system; as well as a new upper construction for a more comfortable fit. Its launch is scheduled for early 2022 in men’s and women’s sizes. Under Armor has yet to announce pricing.

Do you really need another running tracker?

Under Armor Connect is not intended to replace your running watch or fitness tracker. It’s more akin to the Garmin Running Dynamics Pod; or Nurvv Run smart insoles. It provides you with additional data that could not be accurately collected from your wrist. Link your shoes to your phone and you’ll get real-time guidance on your cadence, pace and stride.

You’ll still need a GPS watch to track your route and to see your time, distance and speed at a glance. But it looks like the extra data from a smart shoe can make a real difference. In 2020, Under Armor analyzed data from 87,000 Map My Run users. The brand found that people using its Form Coaching tool ran 7% faster and 3% further than others.

This difference can be explained by a different vision of running; the type of runner who invests enough in their training to care about analyzing their form may already be spending more time training. But this data is still interesting to read and could give you the boost you need to relaunch your efforts in the new year.
