Electrification is not an empty word at Peugeot which strikes hard with its first rechargeable hybrid SUV, the 3008 Hybrid4. Monster of power of 300 ch, it is endowed with 4 driving wheels and offers a range of 59 km in electric.
The European Union has decreed for 2020 a drastic reduction in CO2 emissions – 95 g of CO2 / km – to the automotive industry. If this figure does not cause problems for automakers such as Toyota or Tesla, for others, it could result in heavy fines.
At Peugeot, we went beyond 95 g of CO2 / km by setting an even more stringent standard set at 93 g of CO2 / km. Besides, for 2020, Peugeot would already have satisfied the requirements of the European Union according to Jean-Philippe Imparato, the director of the brand. To achieve this goal, the Lion brand relied on its future best-seller e-208, its e-2008 SUV and its rechargeable hybrid models 508 Hybrid, 508 SW Hybrid and 3008 Hybrid. The latter is notably available in a four-wheel drive version under the name Hybrid4. This is the model that we had the opportunity to Review.
A 3008 supercharged 300 hp
For successful rechargeable hybridization, take a fashionable type of vehicle, at random an SUV, choose the model that hits the mark, the 3008. Equip it with two electric motors and a battery, or 340 kg extra, and you will get the 3008 Hybrid4. Despite its 1,853 kg, it is rather agile on the road and in the mud.
The Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 – not to be confused with the model of the same name released in 2011 with a diesel-electric twin-engine – is equipped with a petrol engine block, the 4-cylinder 1.6 liter Puretech 147 kW (200 hp). It is combined with two electric motors – one per axle – developing 81.2 kW at the front and 83 kW at the rear. Total power: 300 hp. 0 to 100 km / h is reached in 5.9 s. Note that in 100% electric motorization, the maximum speed is 135 km / h against 235 km / h with the three motors.
The two electric motors are powered by a battery (90 kW) signed LG Chem with a capacity of 13.2 kWh. As for recharging, it takes 7 hours to recharge from a domestic outlet (8A) versus 4 hrs on a reinforced outlet (3.2 kW, 14 A).
Thanks to the hybridization, the trunk of the 3008 Hybrid4 only offers 395 liters instead of the 520 liters of the classic 3008 while the rear seats do not fold flat.
In terms of emissions, Peugeot announces 29 g of CO2 / km and an all-electric range of 59 km. In reality, we will see that it is quite different.
All-electric starting
Once on board, our 3008 Hybrid4 starts in cathedral silence, understand that only the electric motorization is required, zero emissions obliges. Even if the vehicle is in hybrid mode. Indeed, the Peugeot 3008 offers four different driving modes: Electric, Hybrid, Sport and 4WD.
In the case of Electric mode, we understand that one of the electric motors – or even both – was in action with the particularity of transforming the 3008 into propulsion. The second mode is a mix of the three motors knowing that at low speed it is the electric that leads the dance. The Sport mode speaks for itself: the three engines are in unison – in other words, the power reserve is quickly exhausted. Finally, the 4WD mode (four-wheel drive) favors the fairy electricity.
As we mentioned earlier, the all-electric range of the 3008 is 59 km. Suffice to say that by following the route – concocted by Peugeot – consisting of motorways, national roads, small mountain roads with beautiful bends and even trails, we were closer to 30 km. We must admit that we had a heavy foot (9.4 l / 100 km, 23.8 kWh / 100 km), especially on small mountain roads where the 3008 Hybrid4 is just waiting to jump, despite its heavy weight . Let’s add that consumption soars as soon as the battery is dry.
Fortunately, regenerative braking is essential. The latter activates as soon as you brake or release the accelerator. Another solution is to switch to Brake (B) mode from the lever of the 8-speed automatic transmission. In both cases, everything is done smoothly. On the other hand, we would have liked a manual mode, in particular in the descents where the engine tends to "howl" while waiting for the good report to be put in place. The only solution is to use paddles on the steering wheel. Another downside, energy consumption and recovery, visible from the central touch screen in the form of a bar chart: orange for consumption and green for recovery. We would have liked to have figures to really realize.
The i-cockpit, Peugeot's signature interior
Once aboard the 3008 Hybrid4, aficionados of the brand will find a cabin inaugurated in late 2011 on the 208, the i-cocpkit. As a reminder, the i-cockpit consists of three key elements: a small flat steering wheel, a combination of digital instruments and a capacitive touch screen. In the case of our 3008 Hybrid4, the ultra compact steering wheel has two flats separated by a hexagonal hub.
With a 12.3-inch screen (31.24 cm diagonal), the instrument cluster can be configured using the steering wheel controls. Depending on the priority given to the information, we can highlight the navigation, surrounded by two counters, reveal the different energy flows of the vehicle. Hybridization requires, a gauge informs us about the electric mode of the vehicle. Finally, there are the usual information such as the amount of fuel remaining, the battery life, the number of kilometers traveled, the gear engaged, the driving aid or the speeding alert.
As for the 8-inch central touch screen, it's the car's control tower. It is controlled either with the fingers, or using the piano keys aligned in a row of onions also called "toggle switches".
Although the keys are aesthetic, we will tend to go directly to touch mode rather than using the keys, except for the hybrid mode symbolized by a lightning bolt.
Pressing the command in question displays energy flows, statistics (graphs) of electricity and petrol consumption, an energy saving mode and the configuration of recharges.
Like the standard version, the 3008 Hybrid4 is compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Mirror Link. Regarding the equipment, there is a classic USB port, a UBS-C and three 12V sockets. Induction charging and the 220V socket are optional.
Specific driving aids
Specificity requires, the 3008 Hybrid4 has driving aids (ADAS) specific to the version. Thus, the "Safety Plus pack" offers collision warning with automatic activation of emergency braking, active lane departure and lane departure warning, blind spot alert (BLIS) or driver vigilance.
But we will particularly appreciate the adaptive cruise control with Stop & Go function coupled with lane keeping. The set works rather well and reacts quickly as soon as you have fun letting go of the steering wheel. Among the other aids, there is obviously the speed limiter and the recognition of traffic signs (speed, stop, prohibited direction, etc.).
For those wishing to go off-road (if, if possible), the 3008 Hybrid4 has the HADC (Hill Assist Descent Control) function allowing the vehicle to manage somewhat tricky descents.
The rear view camera facilitates parking by offering a rear view or an aerial view displayed on the central screen, an image coupled with a graphic aid on the ground and an audible signal.Note that there is a second optional package (€ 600), Park City 2, including a front camera, a 360 ° top view and active assistance for parking in battle or in a parking space.
Balance sheet
This Peugeot https://redaction2.lesnums.com/Hybrid4 is rather a pleasant surprise with a point-to-point hybridization system, a chassis that allows you to drive the vehicle anywhere. We remain amazed by his all-terrain skills, to the extent reasonable. However, some body protections would not be a luxury.
Of course, like the very first model, everything is not perfect: the slowness of the automatic transmission and a little higher consumption as soon as one leaves the city. From a high-tech point of view, no complaints, the SUV 3008 is up to date standards.
However, at € 53,800 (GT finish), the Peugeot 3008 is not specially given, especially in comparison with the Opel GrandlandX Hybrid4 billed € 51,700 in its Ultimate version. Admittedly, the DS7 Crossback E-Tense remains more expensive at € 61,800 in Grand Chic finish. What plays in its favor as well as for the Opel and the DS7 is the absence of an ecological penalty.
Otherwise, you have the 3008 Hybrid 225 hp available from € 43,800 (Allure finish).
