Google and its smart health connected lenses, it's coming soon!

Originally announced for 2019, Google and Novartis smart health connected lenses may be eligible for early release, thanks to the impressive progress of the development program.

Smart contact lenses

In 2014, the American giant Google (and more specifically its Research and Development division) had indicated that a concept of "smart contact lenses" was being developed. A development carried out with Alcon, the ophthalmic subsidiary of the Swiss pharmaceutical group, Novartis. There are two main reasons for this partnership: diabetes and presbyopia! The idea is to create a smart lens, able to continuously measure the level of glucose in the lacrimal fluid, and so warn the diabetic person when the latter is about to have a hypoglycemia attack!

But Novartis also plans to use these smart lenses to help people with presbyopia, that is, those who cannot read without glasses (unless they trigger severe eye strain). Would the smart health connected lens be the key to solving certain health problems almost immediately?

What is it made of?

This lens was manufactured with components known to all: a microchip, sensors and an antenna (rest assured it is barely thicker than a hair). At the time when the Californian firm announced this project, a small LED integrated in the lens (this to prevent possible hypoglycemia), was also in development (a bit like this 3D printed lens).

And now where is it?

It appears that the project has progressed faster than expected, since Google has just obtained 44 patents regarding smart health connected lenses, and already seems to know what its final product will look like and how to market it around the world. Currently, Another 53 patents are pending and the American company hopes to see them validated in the coming weeks. Google hasn't released any other information at this time, but we'll let you know as soon as we learn more!
