high color television smart health innovation
With the 55POS9002, Philips has unveiled its second television based on OLED technology. There were many promises, especially regarding its superior image quality. For what result? Find out in our Review.
Standing out from the competition is difficult in the television world. You have to have a clear advantage, the one that makes the buyer want to set his sights on this product and not another. This can be the sound, a curved screen or even exclusive applications. At Philips, the choice was simple: highlight a high quality image and Ambilight technology. The promise is well kept, as you will see in our Review.

Design and ergonomics of the Philips 55POS9002
Like most quality televisions today, especially those based on OLED technology, the Philips 55POS9002 is very fine. The screen bezel is also very simple, without any button or connection port to “spoil” its design. These are all on the back of the device, which turns out not very practical if you want your TV to be “glued” to a wall. It is made of plastic. So we end up with an unpleasant contrast compared to the metal of the slab, in addition to giving a misery effect of the electronic part. The latter is also well supplied, whether in HDMI or USB ports. Finally, this is where we find the Ambilight system (see “functionalities” section) and the triple ring speaker (see “Audio” section).
The Philips 55POS9002 has a big highlight in its design, namely its base. This central stand offers a very good balance on television without asking for a lot of space. Thanks to its layout, it can indeed fit on almost any piece of furniture, even those with a shallow depth. A quick and easy installation made possible thanks in particular to the lightness of this screen. On the remote side, we end up with an object quite imposing. A fact quickly forgotten when we notice that it incorporates a keyboard, a directional pad and even a microphone. Three minor elements therefore, but offering very significant features.
Philips 55POS9002 features
To talk about the features of the Philips 55POS9002, we must first discuss its operating system: Android TV. It is common to several televisions and therefore proves to be very classic in its form. This does not prevent it from being very efficient and offering smooth navigation. We find all the applications that have become inevitable in recent years: Youtube, Netflix, Google Play … The catalog is large and we generally find what we are looking for. Nothing very original then, but we don't change a winning team.
If Philips can stand out from the competition, it's good with Ambilight. Its basic principle is to broadcast colors corresponding to the images behind the television. The system allows better immersion when watching a movie or a game. The least we can say is that it is effective and offers a very different atmosphere when activated. Ambilight can be easily removed or altered (brightness, random lighting, etc.) and even binds to certain objects. We are thinking in particular of Philips Hue smart health connected bulbs which allow the system to be extended to an entire room. If this functionality remains optional, it is a real plus for this television.
Image quality of the Philips 55POS9002
Image quality is certainly the most anticipated element regarding the Philips 55POS9002. At this level, we can say that the object does not disappoint. First of all, the colors strike the first viewing. The OLED screen works wonders, with a made beautiful. From the coldest to the warmest, the colors almost seem to exceed reality in terms of quality. The image is also perfectly detailed and sharp, without any blurring. Even in the game, the image processing is flawless.
If your TV is in a particularly bright room, there will be no problem. Indeed, the Philips 55POS9002 has a very effective anti-reflection system. Even with the rays of the sun directly on the screen, you can watch your film or series without any problem. Finally, there are several modes for adapting the image according to needs, such as cinema mode for example. These actually just change a few features automatically, rather than doing it by hand. That said, the self-help menu is readable and easy to handle. You will therefore be able to change the image as you wish in order to obtain the rendering that you find most enjoyable.
Philips 55POS9002 audio quality
No object is perfect, and the Philips 55POS9002 is no exception. If the Review so far honors this television, we must also dwell on its weak point: audio. The sound is transmitted by three devices: two speakers and a Triple Ring speaker. Despite these multiple sources, it is difficult to find the sound rendering very pleasant. Nor can it be said that he is ashamed, but one has the right to expect a certain level with a television of this caliber. Here, audio management struggles to convince, especially when the treble and bass are linked quickly. If you want to watch a movie with a cinema atmosphere, the sound offered will not be enough. You should then consider buying a health home theater in addition to the Philips TV.
The Philips 55POS9002 facing the competition
There are countless televisions on the market. The Philips 55POS9002 must therefore face massive competition. Here, we're going to focus on the best of them, especially those whose performance is closest to the subject of this Review.
First, we find the LG 55C7V. Its price matches that of Philips television, with which it shares impressive picture quality and an OLED screen. LG's product benefits from a much higher audio to that of its competitor. If it is not perfect at this level, it is much more pleasant than that of the 55POS9002. That said, we don't find the Ambilight system which makes all the charm of the Philips product.
Then we tackle a big chunk since it’s the Sony KD-65A1. It’s just there from one of the best OLED TVs currently available on the market. Its image as its audio are impeccable, and its powerful processor. Its design is also sleek, which can please as well as be annoying. You might think we’re facing the perfect TV, but there’s obviously a catch. Indeed, Sony's product is available around 2990 euros, well above the price of Philips. If your wallet is well stocked, Sony is there for you, but if not, you know where to turn.
To finish, we approach a TV a little different from those mentioned above namely the Sony KD-49XF9005. It is indeed once again the famous Japanese brand, but in a different genre. So, we are not in front of an OLED screen, but of a “Simple” LCD. Despite everything, with its 50 inches and its image quality, it offers more than adequate performance. If these remain lower than those of his opponents, we must not forget that his price is also more affordable: 1190 euros in most specialty stores.
Conclusion
The Philips 55POS9002 is without a doubt high quality television. Its image is impeccable and its design is as practical as it is pleasant. The Ambilight system is more than just a nice option, but a functionality that brings real immersion. If there is only one problem to remember, that would be the audio. Given the device, we could expect much better and the disappointment is there. That said, the Philips TV remains an excellent product, especially since its price is close to the competition.
