Hope for Fibromyalgia Patients?

Functional exercise could be a solution to reduce the symptoms of fibromyalgia patients.

The fibromyalgia is a disease of which the etiology is relatively unknown. As for the treatments, they are few and not very effective at the moment. Even if it is necessary to have some replication before concluding definitively, exercise, especially aerobics, Modestly improves well-being, function physical, to relieve the pain and stress points. However, the placebo effect plays a major role in modifying symptoms of this pathology.

Consequently, in treatments such as physical activity where it is difficult to set up blindness protocols, it is difficult to know if it brings its own effect or if its action is simply due to the contextual effects it generates. However, physical activity being necessary to maintain good health, this question is of little importance from a clinical point of view. A recent study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine & sciences in sports tells us more about the value of functional exercise in the management of this pathology.

Improvement over time

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of a training program on pain, physical condition and quality of life of fibromyalgia patients in a prospective longitudinal study of cohort a duration 9 years old. Forty women with fibromyalgia participated in this study: 24 received an exercise program and 16 served as a control group. Sensitive points, pain assessment, physical fitness, the impact of the disease on quality of life and overall quality of life were analyzed using standardized questionnaires.

The intervention group experienced significant improvements in the scores for all tests, while the control group showed significant deterioration in the impact of the disease on quality of life. In addition, the intervention group experienced significant improvements in leg strength, balance, cardiorespiratory status, emotional management and mental health. Conversely, the control group considerably degraded on these parameters in general. While interesting, these results are data ad hoc, That is to say, scientists have realized their improvement without trying to study them at the base. We must therefore be careful with their interpretations. Finally, according to the authors, the regular practice ofphysical activity of moderate intensity shows a positive long-term effect on the physical condition, pain, impact of the disease and quality of life of women with fibromyalgia.

Exercise: necessarily more effective than a placebo

Now, we know the virtues of exercise in clinical practice. It can even be prescribed on prescription for certain long-term illnesses since 2017 in France. With all the metabolic effects that physical exercise brings, it is very likely to confer its own effect, in addition to the contextual effects on all types of patients. Whatever pathology you have, discuss with your medical team the suitable physical activity that may be suitable for you. AT frequency and appropriate intensity, it can only do you good.
