Choose when and which notifications to display in virtual reality

Now that you’ve enabled notifications both in your headset and on your smartphone, you’ll start to see phone notifications appear in your headset as a pop-up window and in the notifications list (the bell button in the bar menu).

By default, app notifications are displayed anywhere in the headset. But you have a few options to change that.

Select when you want to receive notifications

For each app that can send notifications from your phone, you can choose between:

  • Always, it means that notifications will appear whatever you do in VR.

  • health home, does not mean that you are at health home, but that you will only see notifications when you are in the main Quest menu. So you won’t be disturbed while you play or use an app.

  • Never, suddenly the tutorial is useless, it is easier not to activate the notifications.

One trick, if you always choose, is to be able to temporarily suspend notifications. To do this, simply activate the “Do not disturb“. The moon-shaped icon available in the quick actions at the top of the Settings menu. This feature also suspends Quest-specific notifications such as your activity.

The limits of smartphone notifications on Oculus Quest

Although incoming phone calls appear as a notification, unfortunately you cannot answer them using the Oculus Quest. But why not in a future update since the Quest has a microphone and headphones.

LNotifications are sent to your headset even if you are not wearing it. In fact, if the Quest is left on and near your smartphone, notifications are displayed in the notifications list. Please note that they may be visible to anyone who puts the VR headset on their head.

Likewise, if a friend is using your headset, they will be able to see your messages. So you can turn off notifications before you lend it.

Disable smartphone notifications in the Oculus Quest

  • Open the Oculus app on your smartphone.

  • Open the “Devices” section and select your headset to connect it.

  • Once your headset is smart health connected, scroll to the bottom of the headset settings list and select “Phone notifications”.

  • Disable the option “Phone notifications in VR”.

If you regularly share your headset with another user, consider using the multi-user account feature. This forces everyone to identify themselves by putting on the helmet. Thus, each user will receive their own notifications which are linked to each account.
