How to develop memory capacity?

How to develop the ability to memorize and learn? Although physical exercise is great for brain health and cognition, it does not improve memory on its own. To develop the capacity of memory and improve one’s cognitive abilities, one needs physical and mental exercise.

Tasks of sufficient difficulty and increasing level

To create a noticeable neuroplastic change in the brain, learning must include tasks of sufficient difficulty and of increasing level, progress being made during regular daily learning sessions. It works the same way as bodybuilding. To develop your muscles, you have to lift more weight than you think you are capable of. At least three weekly sessions of dumbbells for several weeks are necessary before observing tangible results. For memory development, cognitive training focused on increasing abilities – mental exercise – improves memory along with cognitive skills.

Things to keep in mind

When you perform a specific task, say a series of operations on a computer, the more brain systems you involve in it, the more likely you are to get a good result. And more importantly, these systems are the same ones that you will use later to perform this task on your own. Here are the things to keep in mind when you want to improve your memory:

. Significant events are more easily remembered. We learn better with purpose than by chance experience.

– Actions are remembered better than thoughts.

– Information that we generate ourselves is better learned than if we read or hear it. So to learn a task well, it is better to do it yourself rather than just watching someone else do it or reading the description in a book. This is the concept of on-the-job training. Passive observation barely activates the prefrontal cortex. The key is motivation.

– Actively discovering the information one wants to remember moves it from outside to inside the brain.

– We remember pictures and mental images better than words. The reason for this is that when we were primates we favored sight, whereas rodents and dogs favored smell.

– Memory improves when given rare and new information. . Emotional involvement improves memory because at this time the amygdala is working with the hypothalamus. It is therefore preferable to get emotionally involved in what you want to remember.

– “Elaborate repetition” (thinking about the meaning of the information and linking it to other knowledge already memorized) works better than rote learning, because the more associations and additional dimensions are added, the more the memory is tenacious.

– Here are some facts to shine at dinner parties. Chewing gum increases memory by 35 percent because it speeds up heart rate and increases blood supply to the brain.

Exercise your brain

Developing cognitive reserve is a process that requires being active Watching television or doing other passive activities is useless and on the contrary leads to cognitive loss.

I find watching TV to be a waste of time because unless it’s the news, the brain is barely aware, it has no intellectual challenge. It is simply a way of living vicariously. A bit of TV from time to time doesn’t hurt, but it shouldn’t invade your life. In the same way that ice cream is not part of every meal, television can be a small pleasure that we grant ourselves periodically. If one chooses a specific program rather than standing in front of the screen watching any program, television can be a part of life without having any harmful effect.

Research has shown that older adults who engage in at least one intellectual activity per day reduce their cognitive decline by 7 percent; for individuals in the upper third of intellectual activity, this reduction in risk rises to 63 percent. 27.
