How to install self-locking pavers?

Thanks to their particular shape, the self-blocking pavers can fit into each other. How to ask them? Discover the different techniques.

Ask some self-locking pavers yourself is entirely possible. There are two installation techniques:

  • laying on sand ;

  • laying on mortar.

Here is a short guide to help you lay your interlocking blocks.

Laying interlocking pavers: delimit the work area

Whatever the technique, mark out the area to be paved with stakes. Stretch ropes between the stakes.

Laying interlocking pavers: laying pavers on a layer of sand

This pose is suitable when the pavers are unlikely to sink, so on stable ground, and when they will not be subjected to heavy traffic. Here are the steps to follow, below.

Dig the area to a depth of about forty centimeters, making a slope of 1% to 2% outwards for the evacuation of the water.

Install and then tamp down an under layer of crushed elements (stones, gravel, etc.) over 10 cm. Place geotextile over it, letting it overflow.

Spread the sand about 8 cm thick. Smooth and groom the sand. Don't step on it anymore. To move around, install planks on the ground.

Start from an angle by fitting the cobblestones into each other. Tamp them into the sand by tapping on them. Check the level frequently during operation.

Fill the joints between the pavers with sand. Water the sand very gently.

Laying pavers on a layer of mortar

It prevents the cobblestones from sinking in loose terrain or during a strong passage. Compared to the other technique, you just need to add on the underlay a screed of mortar 5 to 10 cm thick, then install the geotextile on it. Continue as for the other pose.

Sticky note: repeat the finishing step 24 hours later. This will increase the stability of your pavers.
