Huawei Mate 30 Pro: review, Review and specification – Smartphone

[ad_1]

Announced in Munich in September 2019, the Mate 30 Pro did not have a future all traced in France. Despite the undeniable success of the excellent P30 Pro, the US embargo that prevents Huawei from taking advantage of Google services has made Huawei doubt about the marketing of its flagship in France. Google or not, the Mate 30 Pro has such strengths on paper that the Chinese manufacturer has finally decided to offer in France, only on its own website at first.

Without discounting his mobile spearhead, Huawei still put the package to soften the bill claimed for his Mate 30 Pro. The price of the smartphone is set at € 1,099, an elitist price that puts the Mate 30 Pro in the sphere of Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ and iPhone 11 Pro Max. However, from its launch on December 9, Huawei's phone buyers will be entitled to a refund offer of € 200. In addition, there is a Watch GT smart health connected watch, a 15W wireless charger and a case for the smartphone.

Let's also say, it is not very difficult to get as close as possible to a smartphone that benefits from Google services, by using some tips. Even though some applications, including Netflix, will not work as is.

In terms of finishes, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is the image of other smartphones of the brand: irreproachable. The Chinese mobile is particularly elegant, with its shiny back and circular photo block. For a smartphone with a 6.53-inch screen, the Mate 30 Pro is particularly compact and comfortable to handle. It must be said that the display occupies 94.5% of the front panel, which is the highest score of our comparison to date. Unlike a Galaxy Note 10+ that puts the front camera through a small hole in the screen, the Mate 30 Pro retains a notch, wide but fine, to accommodate 3 photo modules in the front.

Some may not appreciate the fact that Huawei's terminal has a screen with curved edges. A curvature more pronounced than those of a Note 10+, which does not interfere with the time of use of the mobile. On the other hand, this choice seems to have pushed Huawei to eliminate as much as possible the physical buttons. Only the unlock button remains on the right edge. For volume control, the Mate 30 Pro requires a double tap on the upper parts of the slices, causing a slider to slide to increase or decrease the volume. Overall, this method works correctly. However, this is much less convenient than real buttons that can be manipulated blindly in a pocket, for example. This at least has the merit of making volume control accessible to both right-handed and left-handed users.

Regarding security, the Mate 30 Pro offers two methods of biometric unlocking. The first takes the form of a fingerprint reader, positioned under the Oled screen. It works perfectly and quickly. The other method proposed is based on facial recognition. Again, unlocking is fast. It is also possible to choose to have to scan the screen to access the lock screen or to access it as soon as the recognition has been made.

The Mate 30 Pro has a function to control his smartphone gestures without touching. The operation here rests on the front camera, unlike the technology of a Pixel 4, based on the radar of the Soli system. It is suggested to scroll through a content or to capture an image by placing one's hand in one way or another. We can not say that we have been conquered by this system which presents some failures.

Like most high-end smartphones, the Mate 30 Pro is waterproof and dustproof (IP68 certified). It is capable of hosting 2 nano SIM cards, or a nano SIM card and a NM card, the proprietary Huawei format that replaces the microSD format.

audio

Lover of wired headsets, you will not be served. The Mate 30 Pro does not offer a 3.5mm mini-jack and Huawei does not provide a USB-C adapter to fix it. You will need to arm yourself with the choice of USB-C provided or a wireless headset. The quality of the output will therefore depend only on the paired device.

The audio part is definitely not well done with the mobile Huawei. The Mate 30 Pro integrates only a speaker, placed on the lower edge. No stereo to put in the tooth so, and a quality not necessarily at the level of the best students in our comparative on this point. We will be satisfied with the speaker for calls or some videos, but listening to music or watching movies is not recommended.

The screen of the Huawei Mate 30 Pro is based on a 6.53-inch (16.6 cm) diagonal slab with a definition of 2400 x 1176 px. What a perfectly comfortable resolution of 409 dpi. One of the main advantages of the Oled technology lies in its ability to offer very deep blacks, and therefore an excellent contrast ratio. The display of the Mate 30 Pro can reach a brightness of 670 cd / m² and go down to 1.7 cd / m², allowing a perfect readability in both bright and dark environments. Glare management is very good, with a reflection rate of 42.6%.

Huawei has long proved that mastery of colorimetry is within reach. The Mate 30 Pro therefore benefits from faithful colors, which is reflected in our measurements by a delta E to 2 and an almost perfect color temperature to 6,460 K. However, we must go through the settings to achieve this ideal and choose the mode "normal" colors and leave the temperature slider on "default".

The reactivity of the Mate 30 pro screen is pretty good. We measure a tactile delay of 74 ms, which is below the average of our comparison. Finally, another benefit of Oled slabs, the persistence is imperceptible.

This is the Kirin 990 SoC house that drives the Huawei Mate 30 Pro. It is particularly effective in all cases of use. Accompanied by 8 GB of RAM, it allows the Chinese smartphone to reach an index of 100.55 on our multitasking Review, propelling it to the top of the ranking on this point. In practice, this translates into an unmatched fluidity of the Mate 30 Pro, whatever it is asked to do.

For the video game, an iGPU Mali-G76 MP16 takes over, and beautifully. The Mate 30 Pro scores an index of 108.99, again tutelage the peaks of our comparative. Huawei's mobile is able to turn into a portable gaming console without problems, making all titles work, even greedy, without slowing or falling framerate.

With a P30 Pro cardboard photo, it would have been amazing to see Huawei plant in the field for his Mate. The last toy of the Chinese brand has 4 photo modules, here is the list:. A 40-megapixel wide-angle sensor module and 27 mm equivalent stabilized optics opening at f / 1.6. A 8 megapixel sensor telephoto module and 81 mm equivalent stabilized optics opening at f / 2.4. Ultra wide-angle module with 40 megapixel sensor and 18 mm equivalent optics opening at f / 1.8. A 3D ToF Camera module for depth measurements

Main module

At wide-angle, the Mate 30 Pro uses a 40-megapixel sensor and optics similar to those of the P30 Pro. Huawei, on the other hand, seems to have evolved its software recipe, since the rendering of the latest Mate is better than that of the P30 Pro. It is in terms of detail that the improvement is the most sensitive. Even in 10 megapixels, the default definition, the images are particularly rich. The color rendering is natural and the dynamics are excellent. We notice here and there chromatic aberrations on some elements of our Review scene, but nothing frightening.

The report is the same in low light, with excellent management of details, without overly abusing the smoothing. Above all, the emphasis is lowered, resulting in more neutral photos. What significantly outperform the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ in this exercise.

Telephoto module

The second photo module allows a "3x zoom". In practice, we find here an 8 megapixel sensor and an equivalent optics 81 mm, corresponding to the focal length of the wide angle multiplied by 3. Surprisingly, the pictures are not in 8, but in 10 megapixels with this mode. A part of digital processing therefore intervenes, in addition to the usual image processing. In broad daylight, the Mate 30 Pro's telephoto shots are correct, but lack a little precision. At least, Huawei did not press too hard on the emphasis here either. On the other hand, the rendering is a bit cold.

In low light, the Mate 30 Pro abandons its telephoto module in favor of a digital crop in the main module. Of course, the image quality drops drastically. The result is rarely famous with the "zoom" modules of smartphones.

Ultra-wide angle module

We have dedicated an article dedicated to the ultra-wide angle module of the Mate 30 Pro. To summarize, it is not the most efficient of day with a level of detail only correct. On the other hand, it clearly beats competition in low light conditions.

Portrait, video and front sensor mode

The portrait mode of the Mate 30 Pro is quite powerful. It manages to cut the subject correctly from its background and generates a consistent background blur. Above all, it is also good in low light conditions, which is not always the case with some competitors.

The video behavior of the Mate 30 Pro is exemplary. Even in 4K at 60 fps, the fluidity is at the rendezvous and the image quality also. Huawei's mobile manages to offer very successful exhibition transitions. The follow-up of the tuning is also of an excellent level. Video lovers will be served. Adds an idle mode that can reach 7,680 fps in 720p. In this mode, it will be preferable very bright environments all the same, on pain of seeing the quality drop heavily.

Huawei pushed optimization to the front sensors. With 32 megapixels, captured snapshots are of excellent quality. The details are numerous and the exposure of the faces is always successful. Backlight management is no problem for the Mate 30 Pro. Self-portraits lovers will be very well served by this smartphone.

The Mate family of Huawei is known and recognized for its great endurance. The Mate 30 Pro continues the tradition with its 4,500 mAh battery. On our SmartViser Review protocol, the Chinese mobile held for no less than 21 h 1 min. It remains slightly behind a Xiaomi Mi Note 10, but ahead of the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ and the Huawei P30 Pro. In practice, the Huawei smartphone will cash without shaking 2 days of intensive use, which is particularly impressive given its high performance.

With its 40 W charger, it takes just 1 h 25 min to fully charge the battery of the Mate 30 Pro.

Strong points

  • Excellent finishes.

  • Well calibrated Oled screen.

  • Very solid performance.

  • Very talented in photo.

  • Autonomy.

Weak points

  • No mini-jack 3.5 mm or adapter.

  • Truncated experience in the absence of Google services.

  • Medium speaker.

Conclusion

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro is without a doubt one of the best smartphones on the market. Technically, the promise of a mobile high end, enduring, powerful and excellent in the photo is well maintained. What a shame when the experience is tarnished by the lack of Google services. Admittedly, it is possible to get around this problem more or less effectively, but that will exclude those who do not wish to complicate their lives. If you're ready for some concessions and get your hands dirty, the Mate 30 Pro is a great choice, otherwise the Xiaomi Mi Note 10, Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ or even the Huawei P30 Pro will be options simpler.
