Huawei sold 2 million Watch GTs: what future for the smartwatch following the Trump decree?

Shift the March 5, 2020 at 3:15 p.m.

Huawei has sold more than 2 million Watch GTs since launch in October 2018. In the first quarter of 2019, Chinese manufacturer's smart health connected watches broke all growth records. Will the Watch GTs continue to be successful despite the company's exclusion from the American market?

In October 2018, Huawei presented the Watch GT at the conference dedicated to the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. Dedicated to athletes, the smart health connected watch is distinguished above all by its record 14-day battery life. Sold from 199 euros, the Watch GT benefits from an AMOLED screen and a very precise cardiac reading. To learn more, we invite you to read our full review of Huawei's Watch GT.

Huawei Watch GT: what future for the smart health connected watch following the American sanctions?

Since its launch, more than 2 million Watch GTs have been sold, Huawei proudly announces on its Twitter account. During the first quarter of this year, long before Donald Trump's decree banning Huawei from trading with American companies, the Chinese firm recorded a 282% increase in sales of "wearables" (smart health connected watches and bracelets) compared to the same period in 2018. In total, Huawei has sold up to 5 million products. Building on its success, the brand expanded its offer with the Watch GT Active, Elegant and Band 3, two watches and a smart health connected bracelet last March.

Is Huawei still able to produce, market and be successful with the Watch GTs? Unlike the brand's current smartphones that run Android, smartwatches are not dependent on Google. The Watch GTs indeed run on Lite OS, a health home interface, and skip Wear OS, Google’s operating system dedicated to smart health connected objects.

On the software side, Huawei does not have to worry. On the other hand, we find inside the Watch OS a component that the firm no longer has the right to use: Cortex-M4 based on ARM architecture. Following the decree of the Trump government, ARM was indeed forced to cut ties with Huawei. At the moment, the future of Watch GTs is therefore uncertain. We will tell you more as soon as possible.
