Huawei Watch GT Elegant Review: Our Complete Review – Watches / Bracelet smart health connected

[ad_1]

Introduction

Announced a little over a month ago, we finally have the Huawei Watch GT Elegant on the wrist. Designed to be a more "chic" version of the classic Huawei Watch GT, it embeds the homemade OS, LiteOS, in a form factor smaller.

Technical sheet

This Review was conducted with a product loaned by the brand.

Design: an elegant watch

Available in white or black, the Huawei Watch GT Elegant is equipped with a 42mm case, which is 4 less than the other models in the range and their 46mm cases.

In stainless steel, it consists of a ceramic bezel which, in its black version that we tested, has purple reflections that match the keys of this color present in the dials. Note that, unlike other Watch GT models, the telescope does not contain minute digits. Finally, the screen is protected by a coating DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) and on the side of the case are two buttons to access the various menus.

The Elegant version has a fluoroelastomer strap, a rubber-like material also found on the Apple Watch Sport wristbands. This material is resistant to fats and chemicals such as acids or solvents. It is also water resistant which allows the watch to go down to 5 bar or 50 meters, but do not expect to go so deep with it. It is only suitable for swimming on the surface or in the shower if there is no difference in temperature!

This watch remains in a more compact format than its cousin with a radius of 4.25cm, a thickness of 10.5mm for a weight of 46 grams without the bracelet and 63 grams with that supplied original. Removable bracelet, which allows to change it easily if it does not please you.

The watch is compact and light enough not to disturb when worn

In short, the Huawei Watch GT Elegant is aptly named: it is an elegant watch that knows how to be discreet on a wrist. The very good quality of the finishes allows him to count his design as a big highlight. She is safe and has never been disturbing during our Review, whether in everyday life, playing sports or sleeping.

Screen: a good screen that lacks a always on

The Huawei Watch GT Elegant has a 1.2-inch AMOLED display of 390 pixels or 325 pixels per inch which gives it a very good readability. The AMOLED enjoys deep blacks and therefore an almost infinite contrast. This forces LiteOS to have a mostly darkened interface to make the best use of the screen's capabilities.

The edges of the screen are themselves small enough to be forgotten but will not compete with the borderless from the Apple Watch screen.

It offers 5 levels of brightness and an auto mode. However, the maximum brightness is not ideal in full sun as on many watches unfortunately. We can also deplore the low number of dials since this Watch GT Elegant embarks only 13.

A weak point of this screen is the lack of a mode always-on. The screen turns on automatically when it is pointed at us, but it stays off most of the time. It also lacks a way to turn on the screen by tapping on it: it is necessary to click on one of the two buttons.

Use: LiteOS, a good alternative to WearOS?

For this Huawei Watch GT Elegance, no Wear OS, we take the formula of the big brother and continue on Lite OS, the operating system of smart health connected objects of Huawei, compatible Android 4.4 and above and iOS 9 and more.

To connect the watch to the smartphone, you must go through the Huawei Health application that will have you configure the device from your phone. Note that it is impossible to connect the watch to the smartphone if the location is not activated on it.

We had already tested the features of LiteOS during the Review of the classic Huawei Watch GT but it is important to emphasize its big weakness: the lack of interaction with his smartphone. Notifications are erasable on the watch but do not disappear on the smartphone and vice versa, and erase the notification on the smartphone will not remove them from the watch. Notifications that are also available from the LiteOS Messages app.

This lack of interaction is also reflected in the inability to perform tasks that we would do with his smartphone from the watch: we can not send messages, not to research information as with Siri or OK Google. Forget about third-party apps.

OS ultra light requires, it consumes almost nothing, is very fast and has only a few slowdowns. The experience however sometimes lacks fluidity in the animations on the screen transitions, but it will only bother the most fussy of us (I am one).

Activity tracking: everything for the muscle

This watch is mainly aimed at athletes, and on this point, it is very complete and offers good features. First, it has a continuous heart rate sensor, so we can know in real time our pace (I'm 80 right now). She also has a sleep sensor to better advise us on our habits and offers various follow-ups of specific sports activities such as running, walking, hiking, cross-country, cycling, swimming or triathlon.

The watch vibrates every hour you sit; practice to get you moving, except when you simply can not move (such as during a lesson or a meeting that lasts). The feature is impossible to block from the watch, it must be done from the smartphone on the Huawei Health app.

If you wear it around your wrist overnight, it will record your sleep data and the different phases you go through. If you then consult your smartphone, Huawei will even offer some tips to improve your nights.

But the biggest problem of the classic Huawei Watch GT was its GPS that could not stand in small streets and then began to cross entire buildings. So, is this problem fixed on the Elegance version? We put the headphones, we start the music and we go for a walk.

And the problem remains the same: we cross buildings when we are in a narrow street, and it was even necessary to wait about twenty seconds to start the walk session while the GPS connects.

I do not remember having bathed …

Autonomy: endurance of several days

The Huawei Watch GT Elegant ships a small battery of 300mAh. With a fairly basic use with Bluetooth and heart rate continuously, she held 4 and a half days without charging it which is not far from the week of autonomy announced.

The watch goes from 0 to 100% in 1h15 with its recharging base smart health connected by usb to a computer. Base that has a USB-C port, but no power supply is included.

The autonomy may be less good than the classic Huawei Watch GT, it does not have to blush against other competitors like the Galaxy Watch Active who held 5 days or the Fossil Sport that was not more than 24 hours.

  • Compact and elegant design

  • Very good autonomy

  • Many activities followed

  • Low customization options

  • Few interactions with the smartphone

  • Unstable GPS
